Default Horn only works when headlights are on?

The horn on my Model A works well, but only when the light switch is in any position that has lights on. At the 6 o’clock position, the horn won’t work though I can sometimes get the horn to blow by wiggling the light switch a bit left to right.

Any ideas? Thanks

Check your lower light ,horn connections at the light switch body at end of steering column. Make sure clean and connected correctly.

I've been chasing this problem for years on my car... pretty sure it's in the light switch but sometimes jiggling the horn button itself works too... let us know what you find out.

Hi Ryan,

I’ll dig into this a bit more and let you know how it goes. Jeff

My horn did the same thing last year Problem was the wire at the switch on steering box came unsoldered and when you turned the lights on the wire got connected to another one and worked Re soldered and all is well

Okay, Ryan, figured it out.

I used rosin core solder to build up the bottom tip of the horn rod. The horn works perfectly every time now.

I took a picture before I smoothed out the new solder. Sorry, the picture is kind of pitiful but I wanted to show you what I am talking about.

The only explanation I can come up with is that the solder button at the end of the horn rod wears down over time, and there isn’t enough contact area unless the headlight switch is turned and changes the orientation.

Jeff

That makes perfect sense to me. I will have to do the same and see if that fixes my problem. I do remember seeing wear on both the horn rod and the contact in the switch body.
