All I know is that these 3 model Ford 9" Diffs are very popular with Hot Rodders, as they are the correct width to slot under an early Ford V8. Later models are too wide and need to be narrowed to fit properly. That is the reason that 57-59 Ford 9" Diffs are so sought after.

57-59 are all the same width. But there are two axle/wheel bearing sizes. A "big" bearing (with larger diameter axle) used on station wagons and Rancheros, and a "small bearing" for regular cars. There may be exceptions for things like retractable hardtops and big block (352) in '58 & '59, not sure about that.

Some guys like them because they don't have the 2 "dimples" in the back of the housing .

The '57-'59 car housings are the same widths but the spring perches on the 1959 housings are slightly more outboard than the spring perches on the 1957-1958 housings. the '57-'58 housings are direct bolt ins under '1955-56 Fords and the early Mustangs. The spring perches on the '59 housings are just enough outboard that they do not bolt directly in to the aforementioned cars without either doing a slight outward bow of the springs or relocating the perches. Also worth noting is at least 2 different size of brakes. The one in my rpu is a small bearing 57, has the 1 3/4" wide drums and they are hard to find, no new ones that I could find. Even the shorter hold down spring nails aren't in any of the parts kits I looked at, all for the 2"
