Default '38 rear brake spring - how to? @*&%^!!

Ok, what's the trick to install the spring on the rear brakes? I have the backing plate assembly on the bench at the moment, but can install them on the axel if needed.

I know you guys know

Thanks as always,
Carl

I do not! ...and that sounds very useful. Do you have a photo of the one I should look for or are they pretty generic?

Vice grips will work. In tight spaces I use the pointed ones.

A long, skinny screwdriver with the spring's end looped around it, and with the screwdriver's end inserted in the hole...as you begin to stretch the spring loop past it's hole in the backing plate, the spring end will almost jump in the hole. DD

I have several different brake tools I use. They are not that expensive and make brake work so much easier.

Hey Alan....I'd bet that since then you have no doubt learned which end of the screwdriver is the handle. DD

Actually, my 49¢ pliers were the chosen extractors of blood. My father hadn't as yet offered his good screwdriver.

Later than that! With rear drum brakes they are essentially the same much later in time. The 5.0 mustang rear brake drums for example up to the 90s.

Some tools don't cut it you have to improvise as you said , we have the spring pliers but on 38 brakes (can be a pain ) we use a large flat screw driver near the rivet to roll the spring off then like Coup man we use a thin 9" electrical one to slide the spring down works good ,with 38 brakes make sure the springs go in the right place the colours and placement you can see here .

Probably so JS. I have never worked on a ford after the 60s. But makes sense.
