Mystery engine
Anyone know what this engine is? Where it came from? And what it’s worth?
I know it says Durant Motor Company but I’m just curious if any of you guys have seen one or know any info or back story on them. By the way I just bought it today for $100 bucks! lol

Re: Mystery engine
"The Star was an automobile marque that was assembled by the Durant Motors Company between 1922 and 1928. Also known as the Star Car, Star was envisioned as a competitor against the Ford Model T. (In the United Kingdom, it was sold as the Rugby, to avoid confusion with the British marque.)[1]"

Re: Mystery engine
Durant rods could be installed in '28 and earlier Chevies, they were longer and thus provided more compression in the Chevy. A tiny bit of history that nobody today knows.

Re: Mystery engine
Thanks for the info!
Not sure what I’m going to do with it but it seams kind of rare so I guess it will sit in the garage til someone needs it.

Re: Mystery engine
It says Continental, so it may have non-Star applications. I have not seen a Star in a long time. There is a club for Durant cars and a Star forum on AACA. You might find someone who needs it on one of those sites.

My Grandfather was a Star dealer in Los Angeles until their demise.

Re: Mystery engine
Continental provided engines to a host of US auto companies.
I would not think a Star with the Cont. 4 cylinder would not be very rare, they were a cheap common car here, sold as Rugby outside Nth America as mentioned. The 6 cylinder cars were marketed as Durant here. There were some Rugby 4 midget racers here in NZ in the '50's. Cheers - Tom in NZ |

Re: Mystery engine
I got the engine today and a few spare parts with it. One looks to be an old rusted Zenith.

Re: Mystery engine
Great to save these old engines and parts as long as you have storage space, you might have it for some time.I saved an old Ford flat head block and parts, stuck with it for 4 years already!
