Default Horn honking randomly!

Hello,
Another question for the experts on here.

The horn on my '55 Vicky occasionally honks without any input from me.
I replaced the relay recently after rebuilding the horns, then when this problem started I replaced the column horn wire with a original style one, so that shouldn't be the cause.

Has anybody had a similar problem or any suggestions what could be causing this. I can only think that there must be some kind of earthing inside the horn button, but it all looks OK.

Thanks for reading,
Chris.

Most likely your horn ring air gap is improperly set or the insulator is out of position or worn out. I vote for the air gap. I've checked the manuals for both my cars and can't find a spec for the air gap or a procedure for adjusting it. You'll need to remove the horn button and check that the contact ring sits at the same height all the way around. If there's a low spot it's likely the perpetrator. How to adjust it out is up to you.

I am also using a repro horn wire inside the steering shaft. When I first hooked up the car battery, the horns blew automatically, so I disconnected the horn wire at the bottom of the steering gearbox and it stopped.
In order to correct the problem, I removed the new horn wire and chopped a little bit off the spring that pushes the horn contact button upward.
Decreasing the length of the spring increased the gap between the contact and the bottom of the horn button. Put it back together and now it only works when I depress the horn ring. Be careful not to cut too much off the spring as that will increase the gap too much such that the horn will never blow no matter how much you push down on the horn button (ring).

My '41 did exactly same thing. Replaced all wires and finally rebuilt the insulators under the horn button. They looked OK but rebuilding them did the trick

Had the same problem on my 55' Customline, we weren't worried about the horn at the time, so we just disconnected it. Thanks for the help, now I know what to look for when I get it reconnected.

Thanks everyone for your help. I guessed that the problem would be under the button somehow, now I've got an idea what to check out. I'll let you know how I get on!

Thanks,
Chris

Having read this post I decided to fix my horn on my 55. I found the problem to be the rubber insulator/spacer between the contact plate and the plastic horn emblem. It was slightly compressed. I put a 3/16" foam spacer between the rubber and plastic emblem. Problem solved - horn now works a treat and doesn't go off by itself anymore.

I've managed to fix it!
The rubber pad under the centre badge was loose, so I dabbed a bit of glue on both ends of it, reassembled it and now my horn works perfectly with no more embarrassing random "HONKS".
Thanks again everyone for your advice.
