Motometer Locking Cap Installation
A Boyce Junior Motometer was amongst the spare parts provided by the previous owner of my 30 Coupe. Below is a photo of my radiator neck (before I had the radiator cleaned and repaired) and wanted to know if the installation procedure calls to slightly turn the cap to the right as I would with the stock cap so that the brass tabs contact the grooves and tighten with the Allen Wrench? If so, the only way this will work is if the assy is slightly elevated vice sitting flush on the base of the neck. Sorry if I seem ignorant but I am a bit confused on the installation. I am beginning to think I may be better off using the stock cap and putting the Motometer on the shelf as a display but I haven;t thrown in the towell yet. Hope my question makes sense and appreciate the guidance. Best, Steve.

Does it have a gasket? If not you will need one between it and the neck.

Yes, you will turn the cap in the neck some, may take a few tries to find the sweet spot so the meter looks right once it's twisted closed.
And check the gasket, it may be all swelled up and hard if it's old. Give us all a pic once you get it on...Thanks

Yes-I had to purchase a repair kit which came with 2 gaskets...1 small one between the flip up and lock cap and 1 larger one for the bottom of the lock cap.

What kind of cap is it, Stanco or Jarvis ?? Both go on with the hinge to the back and straight to the windshield. By the picture your shell is not centered over the radiator, this will cause rubbing on the cap at all times, if you can get it on..

You can also loosen the nut on the bottom of the cap securing the motometer. You then install the cap to the neck. Adjust the direction of the motometer to your liking and tighten the nut to secure it.

So what you are saying is, the Stanco or Jarvis hinge can end up most anywhere within an arc of where it fits best to the neck? Or is there a way to adjust so it folds straight back instead off to one side or the other?

I always like to have the hinge of the motometer aligned with the center hood rod. Line it up and tighten up the tabs. I suggest holding the tab 90 degrees to the neck with your finger when tightening up the tabs. You can then adjust the direction of the motometer.

I am sorry, guess the meaning of what I was saying in relationship to what Steves46 issue is, didn't get said as well as it could. Without more input from the Steves46 we are spitting into the wind. I read his question as the cap with moto-meter assembled together already, came with the car and and may have been on it at one time(?) and would have been lined up and now is trying to refit it and is having issues. Dick M you are correct about being able loosen the meter and realign it. I am looking at the issue from a differently. But, I am going to stand by my statement because if you want to have the hinge centered to the hood, which is where it may be now, we don't know, then you will have to approach the issue from a different angle. If the hinge is lined up with the center and the tabs are pulled up and with the gasket in place, the cap is still not seating on the neck then ether the neck is installed wrong or need more gaskets between it and the cap. One other thing, could be there has been a fitting issue in the past and is why the cap/meter was not on the car when he got it, but that is a guess at this point.
