Default Just Picked up This 36

Hi guys, Its been a while sense I have posted but I do check in every so often to see what has been going on.
I just picked up this little 36 Cabriolet, all stock. I want to change it over to hydraulic brakes and keep the wide 5 wheels. My question is can I just change out the spindles to the later 37-48 spindles, use the 39-48 backing plates and my stock wide 5 drums?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Dan

Nice find. You might find that the conversion to hydraulic brakes pushes the wheels out in the fenders a bit. I think (not 100% sure) that you will need 39 hubs/drums in addition to the parts you have listed. The question has to be asked, why change? If the brakes are in good condition they should stop the car ok.

Mart.

That's a heck of a nice ol' '36!

Using the '37-'48 spindles, you'll need to use '37-'39 front drums to retain the wide-five bolt pattern because of the ONE-YEAR-ONLY '36 drums having a LONGER SNOUT to match the oddball '36-ONLY spindle length....but YES, your combo will work. The long snouts can be seen below. DD

Nice piece of info about the '36 front drums/spindles.

My phaeton will slide the tires with the mechanical brakes and stops the car in traffic easily. Personally wouldn't think of changing to hydraulics. Just my preference.

Install floaters, not hydraulic.

Dan-

I just finished changing my '36 cabriolet over to hydraulics. You must use '37-'48 spindles and '37-'39 front drums. For me this was the hard part. Finding usable front drums proved difficult. Many people think '36-'39 are the same. they are NOT. Rear drums can be used as is. For mounting, I used the V8 shop's fixture. I had to do some minor changes to get it to do what I wanted one of which was a remote filler.

Great information that is exactly what I needed.
Thanks...

I'm also looking for a nice set of 39 pedals. If anyone has a set please let me know.

Thanks Dan

just put a set of Flathead ted's floaters on a 36 sedan, this is the 3 rd set I have put on. 29 model A, 34 coupe. they work like hydraulics and half , no make that 1/8 the trouble converting of to hydraulics. think about this and then go to flatheadteds website and loo it over

Mr Will, did you sell that nice '35 coupe pictured in your Avatar? I remember your posts in the past and all the work you did on that coupe. Was very surprised when you mentioned plans to sell it. What all do you have in the cards for this nice '36 Cabriolet?

I went with floaters on my 36 and was very pleased. Nice buy, by the way.

Yes I did sell that car and am sorry I did. I have been watching for a roadster but they are hard to come by so when this car came up I jumped.
I am basically going to do the same thing to this car that I did to the coupe. I have plans to tow my Kozy-Kamp so keeping the mechanical brakes is out of the question.

I did find a set of 37-39 wide 5 front drums and backing plates from a friend but still need a set of backing plates for the back.

Sounds good, but IMHO, if I was planning to put hydraulic brakes on any of my '35's at this stage of the game, I would spend the $$'s and go with the MT Lincoln brakes made here in the USA.

Did you get that cabriolet from Memory Lane Motors? It looked good in their photos.

From what I understand the Lincoln backing plates will not work with the wide 5 drums?
