Two tooth worm gear press for 43"
I will be purchasing the worm gear already on a steering shaft from a vendor. I'll need to push the worm gear further up the shaft because I am lucky enough to have one of the about 20% of the Gemmers with the shorter 43 inch shaft. Just how do I know when the worm gear has been pushed up to exactly where it needs to be? Just push until there is one inch of shaft on the end? Do I use some kind of dial indicator, or is it not that exacting?
I am aware that I'll need new races and bearings for the different shoulder angles. Thanks experts. Never mind fella's. I see Snyders has a 43" ready to go. Last edited by Great Lakes Greg; 01-01-2011 at 07:34 PM. Reason: new information |

Re: Two tooth worm gear press for 43"
I had the same problem. I have a shorter shaft Gemmer and had purchased the longer shaft. Took it to some machineists who either couldn't do it or would charge as much as a new one would cost. Some suppliers have both lengths of shafts for two tooth Gemmers. I just sent mine back in and had it swapped out for a shorter (about 1") worm and shaft. Pete
