I am thinking about pulling the pan, just to have a look at the bottom end, and was told by a friend that when putting the pan back on, aligning the oil pump can be a challenge. Any input on this and if so how is the best way to manage the issue? Thanks

Buy or make something like these to help align the pan:

Buy or make something like this to hold the oil pump in the car after the oil pan is dropped. Assuming the engine is staying in the car. The oil pump is held in place by a spring on the bottom of the pump that the oil pan presses against.

A thin piece of paper will shim and hold the pump in place while bolting up the pan.

"Someone" peened over the pump locating dowel, to hold Vermins' oil pump in place.
The engine was built by a local, long time rebuilder. "Maybe" it was a common practice amongst rebuilders????
The oil pump gear drive sleeve was also locked in place, "somehow" & didn't even have a hold down spring on it!---I suppose they were making it foolproof, for the HOME/SHED/BARN/DRIVEWAY installer???---I think they did GOOD!
