Default Steering woes

On a resent tour in my 15 roadster the play in the steering was about 4 inches which makes it hard work
Do i need a new gear case and gears as the rest of the steering gear looks ok
I have had the car for over 50 years

You can pull the cover and check things out. If you need to replace things look for late model parts and get easier and more controlled steering.

Look at your tie rods as well. They make a shim set to help get rid of that but you sound like you have a combination of issues going on there.

Pitman arm could be out of round or even loose on the bottom of the steering shaft.

I just got the jan/feb vintage Ford from MTFCA and Mike Vaghn has a great Q & A on this subject and other related repairs.

as suggested a front end checkout is in order. king pins, tie rod ends, pitman arm, wheel bearings, ect. That's the "easy" stuff. then move on to the steering wheel gears & case.
