Default Engine change

Little history. I have a 1935 Ford Slant back with a 350/350 tranny. I’m thinking of replacing that with a 35 flathead out of a 35 truck. I just like the way the flatheads look in these cars. Btw Mines a driver. Like to hear your comments pros/cons on this?

As a die hard, Ford guy, I LOVE it And as a flathead guy, I love the looks of the 21 stud, head mounted water pumps. That's exactly why I'm rebuilding my 68 engine.

Unless someone, in your area can pour babbit bearing, you'll need to make sure the engine has insert mains.

Regarding the head mounted pumps, They don't flow as well as the block mounted ones. The cooling system needs to be in good shape and make sure the radiator is topped off.

Most insert blocks, of late '35, will have LB stamped in the top, right front of of the block but, not all. Mines a early '37 and their not stamped.

Should I look for a newer flathead motor? Say out of a 50’s Mercury?

I agree with Jack. You will have to change out a few parts (water pumps and bellhousing) and may need motor mount spacers, but the whole process is extremely well documented, both here and on other forums. The big problem with any flathead is getting an un-cracked block. You sometimes have to settle for what's available unless you are prepared to wait a while. I sold a block to a guy who had gone through 5 engines without finding a usable block. Proven good blocks can easily bring in excess of $1000.

Where do you live . Just asking cause if in south Florida, I can lend you some help . I've reconverted a few . The oil pan and a few other problems pop up but it all depends on what was done to yours . For example Mustang 2 frt end , power steering , ac , how the auto trans was installed ( sometimes too much is cut from the X member or its replaced completely, the list goes on .

Better listen to Ggmac. That costs a lot of money, probably 15,000 plus. Sell the street rod and buy a car that hasn't been all f--ked up.
