Throttle linkage?
Hi guys, another issue? Figured I'd put it on the barn. You guys are very bright! I'm going from a cable operated gas pedal. Trying to build a rod a
Linkage made with rods.the reason I'm getting rid of the cable is there's three 90 degree turns in it and it does not work properly! I realize I'm still going to have three 90 degree turns with steel rods. The issue I'm having is I don't know how to make these all work together? They all need some type of pivot point or a bell crank.does anyone know where I could buy a kit so I could build my own? better yet anybody have any pictures of what I'm trying to do? I need to go through the lower part of the firewall where the gas pedal rod goes through, that it has to go up about a foot. Then make a 90-degree turn toward the middle of the firewall. Then it has to go from the fire we're all to connect up to my triple Deuce sett up I have. So all in all I need to make 3 90° turns.unless someone has a more simpler or better idea for this, I'm certainly open to all suggestions. Thanks.. |

Re: Throttle linkage?
What model and year is it?
Have you looked at the stock (firewall mounted) linkage on a similar yr & model as yours? Your description at least sounds a lot like an original style setup. . Last edited by dmsfrr; 06-26-2019 at 06:18 PM. |

Re: Throttle linkage?
To use your stock pedal your best bet is to get the stock linkage from the same year truck. Even one from a sedan may work with a few modifications.
To make a cable system work smoothly, the pull should be in a straight line. This would mean a firewall mounted gas pedal. Something like this: You should be able to use something like this even with a rod set up

Re: Throttle linkage?
You should be able to find an original linkage set up for that truck. They are very simple, two studs and two nuts, and hook the rod through the firewall.

Re: Throttle linkage?
That's the way they are supposed to work, but this type usually uses a cable, not a rod. A rod is not as flexible as a cable which may result in it hanging up as the engine moves. There are aftermarket cable kits available. I've used this kind of a set up on my 48 Ford street rod.

Re: Throttle linkage?
I’d google “bell crank throttle linkage”. A number of kits come up. Your cable throttle should make 2 90’s if the radius is right. One bell crank might solve the problem.
Depending on how your 3 2’s are set up, the stock linkage might or might not work easier than that. FWIW, I’ve had some pretty good bell crank kits made to work on multiple carbs on VW motors. Especially the ones for downdraft Weber’s. |

Re: Throttle linkage?
It took me several hours, I mean minimal days. But I figured it out. It was geometry and engineering rolled into one. A little tip, get yourself some stud mounted heim joints. That little extra movement they give you ,keeps things from binding up. Best of luck ,you'll figure it out....
