Default Water pump shaft nut

I have the Model T service manual, and it is great, except there is nothing on the water pump. I have some seepage from around the shaft nut area. Not a big deal, but the nut is loose. It turns easily, but I didn't want to disturb it until I can find out how tight it should be. Just snug? Since the shaft spins I don't know if I should tighten it very much. Thanks 23 T

Except for the very early models, T's didn't have a water pump so you will not find anything in there on water pumps. There is packing behind that nut that may need replacing or the steel shaft is pitted and will never seal. Google; mtfca; water pump

Tighten the nut just until the dripping stops. You may need to add packing.

You might consider tightening the pak nut while the engine is idling to prevent it locking up the shaft - after tightening & shutting down, make sure upon the next re-start, you verify the fan belt is turning prior to taking off !

My '27 Touring had a water pump on it when I bought it. I repaired it several times. When I finally removed it, the engine ran much cooler.

I don't have a temperature gauge. Is that something that you add, or is it the radiator cap gauge? Thanks

I have radiator cap gauges/motor meters on both of my Model T's, my '22 roadster and my '27 touring. I've owned both since 1988. The '22 never had a water pump but the '27 had one for about 10 years. I find these motor meters useful but also have a hand held laser thermometer which I feel is more accurate. If you check the MTFCA forum you can find many arguments and suggestions concerning water pump use. Most recommend not using them and the reasons are well explained there. In summary, the Model T cooling system was not designed to use a water pump but they are often used as a band aid fix to cooling system problems.
