64 Galaxie replacing turn signal cam

Ok, I have attached pictures showing the cam is held down with a washer on a swagged post. Looks like I need to drill off the swagged cap, drill and tap hole (not good). Looking for help on this one. I have attached pictures of old/new cams

I wouldn't drill anything until I absolutely knew that I had to. Have you tried screwing the turn signal lever out. That might be holding the pivot piece. I haven't run into to many turn signal switch set ups where I've had to drill any rivets. That looks like a tubular rivet tail that is holding a retainer washer in place.

I do not believe that cam is the same I am with rotorwrench on not drilling that rivet on yours.that piece is part of a switch.you need to change the whole switch those 3 screws in picture should allow you to remove it.glad you got wheel off.why do you want need to replace it some times there is a spring that returns the cam to neutral position that can be replaced sometimes.

The nylon piece you are describing is a part of the switch assy-

What is the problem, the switch won't self return?

Looks like it is one of those speed nut locking washers on the rivet. Is it possible to pry it off without damage? They are usually one time use. Never replaced just the cam before, were there any instructions?

Is the nylon piece you show in your 2nd attachment some kind of service replacement?

Where did you source it and what is it designed to correct?

I see them all the time on the "bay" they only cost a fraction of a new switch because that usually the first think that breaks. Not a Ford supplied part.

Here we go-

This Turn Signal Switch Replacement cam will get your turn signal switch working correctly again. When the tabs break on your original turn signal switch the switch will not cancel and return to center. This new cam will correct the problem and save you the expense and trouble of replacing the entire switch.

Complete installation instructions are list on the back of the package.

I think I would disconnect the turn signal switch harness at the base of the column and see if I could work the switch up & out far enough to look at the other side of the switch. It make have a way to disconnect on the other side. If not, I'd be looking for the part they intend to hold the thing together after replacement. A person might be able to drill & use a self tapping screw but I'd be worried about clearance inside there.

original problem, turn signal switch will not return. Instructions with cam purchased from Mac's say snap the speed locking washer with needle nose pliers by bending it a few times and pop off with knife. As I see it, it is not possible to remove this washer especially with the swagged rivet. You cannot break the clip with pliers or get a blade under it. I think the whole ass'y needs to be replaced.

Those clips are tough, spring steel I think. Did the cam come with replacement clip?

Speed clips are a pain in the ahrs. These type cancelling set ups were used for a lot of years so there are bound to be differences. If the pivot piece is metal, a person may be able to drill it and tap for a very small screw to hold a washer. Not likely a real easy job but it depends on how hard it is to find a replacement switch assembly. I find them for the older cars NOS on flea-pay now and then. The parts book for the early 60s models should be consulted to see what part number it uses. It may have been a part common to a larger quantity of different models & years. You just don't know until you check.

from the looks of it you have to remove the signal handle first then get the silver clip in middle of cam off most likely going to trash it then it should come off as far as a replacement clip try restoration specialities

Ace Hardware most likely has the clips if you don't have one.

Speed clips like the ones used to hold trim parts are common enough. They require a stub to hold them. The riveted over end there doesn't really qualify well as a stub. A speed clip might still snap onto it if you can break the old clip off with out damage to the curled part. This is why I recommended a screw of some sort. Evidently the switch assemblies for the automatic and 3-on the tree moveable shifters on the column are harder to source. The ones for the floor shift models are available but I don't know what the difference is.

OK decided to purchase a complete turn signal assembly with loom from Carpenter. Installation was easy part works great. I took the old assembly and drilled off the swag. In removing the broken cam comparing it to that one I purchased from Mac's there was no interchangeability the locking pins did not align and no modification would make it work. Honestly Pay the $50 replace the assembly don't fall is just trying to replace the cam it's not worth the effort odds are it won't fit anyway.

...and now wonder if the replacement cam was released for the OEM switch and/or repro switch?
