Are you putting the dip stick in clear to the loop in the handle??
If not you could be over full.

first do you have and updraft carb on the car, if so the gas will run out on the floor and will NOT get in the crank case while setting. if you have a down draft it can, but it HAS too fill the glass bowl before it can get to the carb. you also might want to run 1/2 qt, low on oil. some model A`s do not like to run on the full mark. my Vicky self levels at about 1/2 qt, low.

Can gas leak into the motor with the fuel shut off from the carburetor bowl? I don't know much about the carb. But that's the only thing I can think of.

It's a Stromberg 81 downdraft

Is a carburetor rebuild the next step is there more troubleshooting I should do

I had originally started 2 threads one for the leak and one for the carb, it looking like they are 2 symptoms to the same problem

i think it might be running so rich that it could be getting in to the oil case threw the rings.
remember there is a valley pan in the oil pan some of the crap oil may still be in your pan .i dont remember did you say the car runs and idle or run good or is it running rough dumping raw gas down your cyliders

It idles smooth and runs well as far as I can tell. The spark plugs all look the same, and looking into the cylinders they all look the same too for whatever that's worth. So I think all cylinders are firing, I thought maybe one wasn't and the cylinder was filling with gas causing the startup issue and getting the gas in the oil.

I checked the oil it was right at F like normal. I didn't smell gas on it, maybe my nose is broke. So I drained the oil and it was black but thin, about like draining hot oil or water so it must be heavily diluted with gas.

I pulled the glass bowl from the sediment bowl, emptied it and reinstalled it. I have not turned the gas shutoff on since Sunday. This morning after about 12 hours it was still empty. So I guess that means the gas shutoff works.

I'm confused, if I've confirmed gas is filling the motor it must be leaking past the fuel shut off and carb. But if the sediment bowl isn't filling with gas how is it getting there?

Is it possible for gas to leak through a sediment bowl without filling the glass?

The fuel shutoff has been off since the motor was running on Saturday so it can't be flooding real quick between me turning on the gas and starting the motor.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve
Is there a filter in the bowl? If so I suppose the fuel could bypass over the top if it is plugged.

Can you disconnect the gas line at the carry and put a coffee can or such under it and observe it latter. this will show you if the S/O valve is leaking...
