Default Today's stupid question

Just put new hubcaps on new powdercoated rims from Wheelsmith.
These caps are TIGHT. (Like on a scale of 1 to 10, where 5 is more
than adequate, these guys are about a 10) I was able to smack them
into place without denting them but like I said, they're tight.

How do I get these things off the rims? (I'm hoping not to have to
make a tool for a slide hammer.....)

Use a firm plastic Bondo spreader. Gently place the spreader between the cap and the rim and tap it with a hammer at several places around the perimeter. It will lift off. Would it be OK for you to sand away some of the powder coating where the cap fit?

Did you purchase the hub caps from Wheelsmith? Seems to me that they warned me about other brands fitting their wheel nibs.

Thanks for that. Really looks like it would do the job perfectly.
The rims were a frickkin' fortune..... don't want to mod them or scratch them.

I have some humcaps like that. I use an old drum brake adjuster arm with a rag on the end and pop them off. I use a rubber mallet to install them ....

The 'Wheel Wizard' from Bob Drake works really well and will not dent or scratch the hubcap/wheel cover. I used it on the powder coated wheel covers and wheels on my '37 and it didn't leave a mark.

Got my Wheel Wizard today....... modded the hook end (circled in red) to make it fit the super tight hubcap/rim gaps I have.
Works like a charm now.
