Great news, and not so great news
GREAT NEWS
I-gotta horn, you gotta horn, all Gods chilrens gots a horn. . . Well, Finally, and with the help of a good friend that KNOWS his electricity, Kelly Thomas, we got my horn problem all straightened out. Sounds great. Nothing like the sound of a "beep" horn. It doesn't say "GET OUTTA THE WAY ! ! ! ", it says "would you move over please." LOL Not really the same problem, but with me letting a little smoke out of the wires a couple of times, I blew a fuse and the lights ended up not working. Simply replaced the fuse and all is well. I am glad to get all of that behind me. NOW, THE NOT SO GREAT NEWS While our home escaped Irma's wrath, my shop and Apatchy35 didn't fare so well. A rather large dead (thankfully) pine tree got blown over onto the roof of my shop and did considerable damage to the building, but thankfully Apatchy35, inside, escaped with relatively minor damage. One of the overhead fluorescent lamps, suspended from the ceiling by small chains, came loose on one end and it swung down and struck the right side of the grill. near the top, and knocked a good piece of the paint and primer off. It and continued downward and put a nice scrape of white paint on the right front black fender. I think that scrape can be compounded out, but the grill is going to require some TLC. It has a spot about twice the size of a quarter that will require a tad of body filler and a paint touchup. The tree fell right on top of one of the side support beams or Apatchy would have to spend quite a bit of time in the body shop. The shop will probably take 2-3 days to get it right again.

Just be glad you weren't tinkering on it at the time.

That's why you have insurance. You should have taken down the dead tree, though, assuming it is on your property.

Re: Great news, and not so great news
Lawson, you've always had a great and positive attitude even under adversity. There's a lot of "bright side" you can look at in this situation. Your vehicle and shop will be fixed and life goes on. I had a neighbors 14' trampoline fly through out 6' fence, hit my restored 56 chevy truck and lodge itself against my garage and 4 wheeler. They claimed "Act of God" and I had to go to court twice to get a ruling in my favor.

Re: Great news, and not so great news
Glad to hear you and your family are OK Lawson. Sorry about the truck but it can be fixed. Glad you've got a "horn". I find with age mine doesn't "beep" as good as it used to

Re: Great news, and not so great news
Hi Lawson, sorry for your shop and truck but could have been much worse I guess. It will fix up again. Now you did not tell us what was done finally to fix your horn. You owe us an explanation at least. All us who contributed have suffered much stress over your problem so come clean. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Great news, and not so great news
Most of the time it doesn't matter if a pine tree is alive or dead when the winds are high and the ground is soaked. Thank goodness I had about 30 removed a year or two ago since I lost 2 giant pines to Irma but they were not close to the house or garage.
The aggravation is they are not even useful for firewood. Inquiring minds want to know about the horn fix. |

Lawson: enjoyed your good news, BUT not the not-so-good news. Like myself, lets just consider us very very lucky. See you at Dawsonville... Jim Langley

Inquiring minds want to know about the horn fix.[/QUOTE]
Barnfind and others who have inquired over the 5 month journey and have given much help. A I stated in my last entry on the thread about the horn button, the bottom line was that the wire running through the horn/light rod had no continuity from end to end and was therefore not making a good circuit between the horn button and the lower end of the horn/light rod, ergo, no power to the horn. Ran a new wire with good solder joints on both ends and voila, the beep was back. Again. Thank all y'all for your tips, suggestions and most of all, your prayers during this most stressful electrical problem for a neophyte electrician.

Re: Great news, and not so great news
Jim. Thanks for the comments. I am afraid my car show/flea market days are over. I can't walk outdoors without a cane, and can't even do that very well. I'm just before having to use a walker to get around. The old legs have about had it, along with other appendages. Have a great time in the beautiful North Georgia mountains.

Re: Great news, and not so great news
Hi Lawson, glad to hear you made it through the storm ok. You and your family are alright and that's the main thing! Material damage is secondary and can always be fixed or replaced. Call me crazy but if I were you I wouldn't repair the truck. What a great conversation piece it will be for future generations, (no matter who owns the truck in the future). That damage will be like a badge of courage saying, "I survived Hurricane Irma 2017 with just these few scratches".
Best regards, Doug. |

Yes, it was quite a learning experience as well.. Glad I don't work on my daily drivers though. I'd be a pedestrian for sure. LOL
