Holley 1273-2S carburetor
I have recently acquired a pair of Holley List 1273-2S carburetors. The research I have done tells me it was the first new style carb for the "57 T Bird. What I can't seem to find is what the CFM of these carbs were. I have done a lot of digging and have found 390, 410, 425. And I know the replacement is 465. These are original Ford, not replacements. Does anyone know for sure what they are?

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
I think the original carbs were 435 CFM

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
Rated @ 465CFM.
Is there a FORD ID STAMPING NO. next to the HOLLEY LIST NO.?

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
My info has the Ford 4100 w/ 1.08 venturis at 480 cfm. The 1.12 4100 used typically on 390 engines is rated 600 cfm

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
The 1273-2S is a service replacement for the original 1273 and 1273-1 that were used on '57 312's. They were built after the '57 production run and after the 1273-1's ran out of stock. Not quite as valuable as an original '57 run 1273, but I'm sure is still considered correct for a judged show car. There are also minor outside appearance differences like the arced slot in the secondary throttle lever instead of the original straight slot. Also the bowls had thicker reinforcement to prevent warpage after installing them.

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
A little off topic but, I have a 4100 with 1.14 venturi's. Does anyone know the CFM rating for it?

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
Sal,
Thank you, I went back and looked at my stash and I was mistaken. All 4 of mine are 1.12. I have a 5th one that is marked ECZ, with smaller throttle bores, it's probably the 450 cfm. I do have one 2100, 1.14 and must have confused it with one of the 4 barrels. Again, thanks, Frank |

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
Frank, the ECZ 4100 you have should also be for a '57 312 Ford. Don't think the T-Bird ever got a 4100 installed on the assembly line.

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
Thank you again.
The throttle plates are stuck on that one. I'll have to see if I can fix it, it might be a good one to try on a 302. Frank |

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
We have in the s hop a 57 T bird 312 with Holley 1273-2S 554 that sat on the car not run for 35+years, since it sat so long not running we replaced the tank, flushed the lines, installed new fuel pump and rebuilt the carb. The carb was cleaned in my ultrasonic cleaner using cleaning solution made for carburetors, rinsed it, used carb cleaner on all the ports and holes then blew them out with compressed air.
Installed the carb and started right up running on fast idle then when the engine warms up and the choke opens the engine dies. When closing the choke to run rich it will idle down until it starts to load up. But when the choke plate is open it dies. When hitting the accelerator it is responsive and runs great just will not idle down below 2000rpm. We checked for vacuum leaks and even changed the intake manifold gasket. Seems there maybe something wrong with the idle circuit. Any ideas and help would be appreciated, Thanks Mike Mondrella Mondrella’s Hot Rod Shop |

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
At this point I'm assuming the idle mixture screws are not making a difference. If you are already two turns out with each, then it's time to go back into the carb. Sounds like the idle circuits are not getting fuel or enough of it. I'll suggest another thorough cleaning of both the air bleeds in the main body and the circuitry in the metering blocks. Keep in mind that the secondary side of the carb also has a 'fixed' or non adjustable idle circuit and if it's not functioning then the primary side may not getting enough idle fuel. Another place to look is at the gasket between the main body and the throttle plate. Any warpage and/or gasket sealing issues there will upset the idle fuel flow also. Ted Eaton.

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
Ted, appreciate your replying with comments and suggestions. We will be running it through the ultrasonic cleaner again and pay specific attention to the idle circuits in the body and both metering blocks. We had already checked for warpage on the body and throttle plate with a straight edge and good. Thanks

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
We finally found the problem and now solved. After checking and trying about everything imaginable, we found the primary metering block was the problem and had never seen a metering block be the fault in all the hundreds of Holley’s I have worked on. In finding the problem we replaced the meter block with one off another spare 4150 carb to try and immediately it ran and idled down perfectly.

Re: Holley 1273-2S carburetor
I've done hundreds of Holley 4150's 4160's and 2300 two barrels, and I also ran into an issue like that only one time. Replacing the metering block fixed it. I never did pull all of the plugs out of the original block to see what the issue was.
