Default '57 Thunderbird Front Brake Drum/Hub

Anyone have experience separating the front brake drum from the wheel hub? I need to replace both front drums and have come to understand a press is needed to separate the hub from the drum.

You simply take the hub/drum assy to a machine shop and they will press the hub out and in.

You can also do it with a punch and hammer (The Olde Heat and Beat Method) but may warp the new drum in the process. The knurls on the wheel stud base is what holds the drum tightly to the hub. It may requite new studs.

As long as you don't admire my hindquarters, we are OK ...

What do you think of what happened at THE OTHER FORUM?

Ted was right, the thread had outlived its usefulness.

I always look for a swage on the lug studs on old Fords. It's a habit from the pre-1949 era. If they aren't swaged then that makes life a lot easier.

So, I guess the whole thing was an exercise in futility. You didn't learn anything.

NOTE - (ADDENDUM in Fr. )

Let's end this as No.1 it has hi-jacked a thread and all I tried to show bore no fruit. The nice thing about using mineral oil as a lubricant is that you will have plenty if you develop a bubble.

Take your pack off, stand easy and smoke 'em if you got them. The trucks will be here shortly.

I am not sure on the later (50's) cars, but the early Fords had the studs swaged so you don't just press them out. You have to get a cutter to remove the swage. I just had the hubs/drums off my 56 Bird and it looked like they were swaged but I didn't really take that good a look at the studs.

Maybe some info while the children play..

The studs had to have been swaged to hold the stud to the drum and the drum to the protruding swaged on the stud.

The drum stud holes were held tightly (pressed) to the hub on those sages unlike the CHEV of the time. You pulled a wheel off one on those and the drum fell free and hit your foot.

The swage cutter is around $90 from Goodson Tools. I've seen an article where a guy used a hole saw. I'm going to replace my drums so I may try the hole saw route. Guess I'll have to press the new drums onto the hubs or....open the holes up just enough to slip fit over the studs.

Have you priced what the machine shop wants?

I wouldn't be opening up any holes.
