Default Back lash noise / end play noise

My roadster from day one has had this back lash noise/vibration when you come off the load or pull.
No history of Motor from BO.looks to have been reubuilt from appearance.
Haven't done compression .

I bought the 31 roadster couple years ago and the motor was locked up but not sezed loses up easy.
Installed rebuild Zenith and rebuilt dissy . Timed with light. Starts and runs great ,no heat issue.
Oils and water runs clean. A buddy of mine thought maybe it had a alum. Timing gear. Pulled inspection cover but it didn't .We also thought if it didn't have the proper tension spring and plunge in the center of the timing gear it could permit some End play ..

Thought I throw it out there and ask the question before I pull the timing cover to check.

Thanks again , not the first time I've asked for help ....

When I was checking mine for a noise I used a long thin screwdriver, removed just the timing gear side cover, and stuck the screwdriver tip as close to the center of the gear as possible, and pried the gear forward. It only moved a small amount, but showed I had good spring pressure. And I could also see I didn't have the dreaded two piece gear with the aluminum center that wears loose.

sounds like too much crank end play
put a pry bar on the front crank pulley and gently try to move it forward and back
not sure if it's the same but when I first got mine running it had noise similar it had .070 of end play
or maybe you can push the clutch in and see if it goes away
good luck

Are you sure it is not the rear axle. If it is the engine try loosening the front motor mount bolt and see if that changes the noise.

Great news that the "problem" was so minor and easily fixed.
When I was in my teens, a friend and I used to joke that we could fix anything with string and sealing wax. I might be giving away my age to even reveal that I know what those things are.
I recently said to him that we had to move on - times have changed. We now should use duct tape and silicone.

In the 70's I could buy sealing wax at the local stationary store. Now it's tough to find a good stationary store, much less sealing wax.

I was looking for the sealing wax a couple years ago to see if it would work for the Model A distributor plug, but it melts at too low a temperature.

Thanks again Richard Dunn for the silicone plugs you made.

Tom,

Bert's has a replacement for that Distributor "Plug".

A washer made from the red stuff that some carb gaskets are made of.

It is not fine point but it works.

As I remember it is in the screw kit. Just ask Tim or Steve to be sure I have the correct part number.

2. Have you tried "Dumb Dumb" or Strip caulk that GM used to seal leaks around windshield and roof panels?

It dries after a while and gets hard. I first saw it used under warranty on Roof / Gutter panels on '79 Malibu sedan and wagon I had.

ACE hardware had it recently.
