You are fine. The third brush does not set the voltage,it sets the amps.In an A the battery itself is the voltage regulator. You can actually put in a 12 volt battery and it will charge. Some say it will throw the solder out of the armature,it probably will if heavily loaded, but I have seen it done lots of times with no problems.

The generator will put out close to 40 volts if you let it.. Generally you adjust the brush to output what you want, like maybe 7-8 amps if don't use the lights much or 10-12 if you do.. I don't like to run these at more than about 12 amps..

So if i checked the voltage comming out of the generator at the cutout and i have 7 volts dc what will be the amps reading if the amp gage is reading correctly?

7 volts = ? amps

7.5 volts = ? amps

8 volts = ? amps

Volts don't necessarily affect or = amps.

amperage reading is independent of the voltage output reading. Your ammeter, if its original, will show a range from 0-20 amps, with generator output about 0-15 amps depending on where you set the third brush. Repro ammeters are often incorrect by a few amps. If you have a professional ammeter, connect it in line from the generator to the generator wire and it will show your amp output as you move the brush. In general, set the output to 2 amps above with headlights on if you drive a lot at night, and less if you're primarily a day driver. The best situation from a perspective of saving your battery from wide cycling or over charging and to save yourself from having to re adjust the third brush seasonally is to install a regulator. Tom Wesenberg, who posts here on this board, makes a nifty regulator that is hidden inside the generator. There is another made that looks like the cutout can available from Fun Projects, that replaces the cutout. I prefer Tom's because I can use an original cutout for original look and I think his is more robust.

I have fitted the regulator from Fun Projects, followed all the instructions, set up the output from the Power House generator at 12 amp (the old cutout was still fitted when setting the third brush), shut down the motor and isntall the new Fun Projects regulator. When you start the engine, the output increases then slowly reduces to 2 amps. It works well for me. See the link from pat in Santa Cruz
