28-29 gas caps gaskets

I have been restoring gas and Radiator caps for years, on the 29-29 caps up until the last year I could buy gaskets for them, Leather for the gas and hard paper for the Radiator. now all I can find for both is cork. I have some NOS gaskets I use for samples that are asbestos. there is some substitute materials out there that I`m thinking of having some gaskets made out of. they have to make a die the correct size to cut them. if I do this, is there anyone else interested in the gaskets?

I can see by the response that it is not worth the time and money to come up with the gaskets as close to correct as I can. thanks Brent and FM for your input.

I think the hard paper ones are not made any more because the 1928-29 radiator cap gasket is the same in fit as the glass sediment bowl gasket, so they make one type fit different applications.

Can you not get the gasket stock and cut your own w/a gasket gutter? Simple job in a drill press.

if it was that easy I would just make them. the heavy asbestos replacement material is very hard to cut. so that is why I`m working with gasket maker to have them made.

Benson thanks Bert`s is showing the Radiator cap gaskets as leather. I will call them on Tuesday.

When you get replacements, compare what you have to the replacement. I recently got replacement gas cap leather gaskets. Put them on and it leaks. Still had the old one, compared it to the new one, the new one is not as thick. Had gas all over my cowl going down the road before I noticed.

Is there any reason both can't be leather? I have some thick tanned cowhide leather I bought in the past.

Benson you were right on. I talked to Steve today and have a dozen each coming. Bratton`s and Snyder`s know longer carry them. only cork. I will see when they get here.

I am trying to seal up my radiator cap with a 1-3/8" x 2-1/2 x 1/8"" thick leather gasket. For one the 1-3/8" needs to be 1-1/2" which I fixed. But it still will not tighten properly. It is still too loose. I tried to add a 1/8" rubber gasket as well but with .25" thickness it is too much. Anyone make a neoprene or nitrile rubber washer 1-1/2 x 2-1/2 x 3/16ths that I can buy? Or is there a problem with my cap. What should the thickness be? Thanks.

the leather gasket is for the gas cap not the radiator. this is a picture of a Original NOS asbestos radiator cap gasket. I have tried to find a substitute material the right thickness. but no luck. A&L makes one that is hard paper and that what I have been using for years. A&L`s are a little on the thin side but they do work. I had buddy a few years back with a 29 Brigg 4 door the cap would hit the cowl before it would seal. the tank neck did not extend out of the cowl far enough. so I made a spacial cap. the original gasket is 1/8" thick

1&1/2" camlock gasket is 2&3/16" OD, 1&5/8" ID, they are available in different materials and thicknesses. maybe that would work?

I made my radiator cap gasket out of cork,my biggest problem is it compresses over time and then I have to adjust my motor meter so it is dead nuts straight.

the one i showed in the picture is 28-29, 30-31 are a different size, on my 31 160A radiator cap i ended up using one of a&l hard paper gasket and a peace of inner tube to back it up, other wise I have water come out around the cap. I do have one 30-31 original NOS asbestos radiator cap gaskets. if i could ever find some good asbestos substitute material the right thickness.

I found last night that if I cut a gasket out of 1/8" thick red rubber material and back it up with another of 1/16 thickness, I could not put it on the radiator. I then removed the 1/16th material and found the 1/8" was too loose. So I added back in the plastic washer I cut from a milk jug behind the 1/8" thick gasket. Now the cap is a good solid fit. So from that I would conclude, that for my 31 radiator cap, a thickness of 5/32" was correct. Whether this will take a compression set and relax with time, I will have to run it and find out.

I just use a rubber O ring in my radiator cap. Screw it down until snug. No leaks no problems. You can get O rings of any size at Tractor supply or similar store.
