Whizzernick,

Is the Hydrodip Burlwood Woodgrain process closer to the original for '33?

I used the Grain-It Plate for mine and although I like it is quite different to the original woodgraining that Nick posted . Actually much closer to the Ashtray lid pictured . The guys from Grain-it are convinced that they have copied the original Burl walnut plate from 1934 but doesn't look like it

yes.
I have a large collection of 33 ---34 glove box doors . the inside of glove box doors is always in good condition. the shade goes from light ( easy to see pattern) to dark. The 33 pattern is quite different than 34.
I have several pictures to show difference and show original woodgrain
pictures are all 1933 . 33 ash tray and 34 ash tray you can see diferance33 - 34 ashtrays.JPG

1934 woodgrain :first picture: inside original 1934 glove box door
2nd :1934 4 door ( my woodgrain ) I have been woodgraing since 1965.
1933 and 1934 are different and very hard to do hand woodgrain .
I have something that is close . most people like my woodgrain but my woodgrain is not as original.
If you have the correct plate( original method woodgrain ) then you can duplicate ( more correct ) 1934 patern ( you also need correct base color ) the base color does go from dark to medium-dark I have a large collection of 1933 1934 samples . many NOS The colors and contrast do go from dark to light .

Is there anyone that has the original burl pattern and color for a dash and a set of moldings for a '33? I know the pattern is straight grain for the moldings. Someone that you could trust? My biggest fear would be to send the dash and moldings to a vendor and never receive them back. I would prefer someone in the Northeast who I could deliver the set in person.

Doug I used a Custom Woodgraining in Scipio Center, NY State . His name Ken Mathews his Phone is 315 729 5060. I met Ken in Hershey at the Fall Show in 2012. I haven't seen him there since? He did my 34 Roadster Dash and was very happy with the job. Glad to be a Help!

stangblue
good job not correct 1934 pattern.
I know you like your woodgrain and it looks good.
My point is : when I restore a 33 or 34 ford I want the most correct woodgrain
possible.
That said : I am a woodgrainer. I have been a woodgrainer since 1965.
I DONOT do original method woodgrain as the CO. that makes plates and tools does not have the original pattern plates.

THEY DO EXIST : Beney Esties started the original method. I flew out to Fl and stayed with him for several days. I saw the tools and plates. If I wanted a dealership
the cost was $50,000. I did not have money and thought I would never do enough woodgrain to pay for dealership . this was around 1975 + or - . I am not sure how many people bought. I did have benny do my 1933 vickey and my 1933 roadster.
I know that one guy ( I dont remembered his name & number ) has correct plates (33-34) as I had him do my 33 phaeton. Thats my story and I am sticking to it.

I agree that the Grain It company’s plate is not correct for 33-34, even though they think it is. Great folks, and great supplies and service, just not like original, but affordable and looks super in the car.

As Nick said, best way to see original is the inside of a glove box door.
