Default Remote door handle spring install

Does anyone know of a special "trick" for installing the spring on the remote (handle) end of a door latch assembly? I was wondering if it can be done without heating the tabs and removing the mechanism cover. I'm working on a '37 pickup.

I have done it without heating.
Using a sharp chisel to start opening the tabs then a larger screw-driver like device to further open until able to grasp with vice grips to fully straighten.
If any tabs break off a simple tack weld will secure the plate to the body.
