Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
I am planning to tow a trailer with a racecar on it, with my '39 Sedan Delivery. It has me thinking about possibly trying to improve the braking a bit. I have some Lincoln backing plates that I could run on the front. Would this be a problem with still using the Ford brakes on the rear?
Thanks for any advice Zach

Re: Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
I had 41 Lincoln front and 46 Ford rear on my RPU, worked well. I am doing the same on my current project.

Re: Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
Thanks guys!
I figured as much. I actually have 4 of the backing plates and planned them for another car. This allows me to have better brakes on the pair! Thanks Zach

Why not just switch to disks?

I have Lincoln front and back on my T touring been on for 30 years. I used a 47 master and sometimes tow a teardrop. Fantastic brakes the T is 2300 lbs and whats a Lincoln 3800? jeez 30 years paid 5 Bucks for the fronts with good drums and had to fork out 25 for the rears, what happened!

Re: Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
Thanks everyone.
I have the rear lincoln brakes to use on the front. I know they won't clear the spindle exactly and may involve swapping to 41-48 spindles (as opposed to grinding). I will likely not have brakes on the trailer, hence wanting more on the '39. My plan is to build an old channel iron single axle trailer with wide 5 wheels on it to match the Delivery. Bruce, I'm progressing... its 1948! thanks Zach

Re: Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
It's a fully fendered fat fendered ford. you are preparing it for towing duty. Why not switch it to power disc brakes?? It's a safety issue. It could always be converted back a few years down the line when it's no longer being called on for towing. I'm not a street rodder, I use drums on all my cars, but for towing, especially with an unbraked trailer, it would make a lot of sense to go to discs, especially as kits are freely and cheaply available.

Re: Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
Thanks Mart, I just couldn't bring myself to do that...
Aside from brake fade with heat with the drums that the disc's wouldn't have... I'm thinking that the tire contact area will be the limiting factor more so then the actual brakes. I could be wrong... This won't be an all time vehicle strictly for towing a trailer... just to certain events throughout the year. We have a modern truck that I can tow with, even a more modern trailer that has brakes. To me, the joy in all of this will be towing a period accurate race car to the racetrack with an entirely period accurate rig. Wearing an old open helmet, strapped in with a WWII seat belt, kick up some dirt and go back home. I have yet to get my time machine working... so this will be as close as I can get. Here's a video that may show what I mean... imagine this with the entire day's journey in 1948, not just the few laps on the track! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMAvSbrjSv4 Zach

Re: Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
Zach, if you get stopped by the DOT.pulling that trailer in Pa. without brakes on it you will pay a heavy fine. In PA. any trailer rated over 3000 gvw. or has more than 1 axle has to have brakes and be inspected. And with the way people in Pa. drive, ride your ass, cut you off, don't use turn signals, talk on cell phones and pull out in front of you cause they don't want ride behind a vehicle towing a trailer, you are taking a big chance with your vintage cars. I drive a truck and go thru DOT check points all the time, and see a lot more noncommercial vehicles being stopped and checked.

Re: Lincoln brakes on the front of a Ford?
Thanks Pete, Not something I had really considered with the law... but... I think I will be under 3000lbs anyways. The cars I may tow are pretty light weight stripped down roadsters or possibly midgets. Nothing like a big old stock car.
It is possibly to put brakes on the trailer if it seems necessary. My plan is to run early floater "spindles" with the wide 5 pattern hubs. Having a drum on there wouldn't be much of a big deal. the trailer is actually a ways down the road anyways, just working on the '39 now and brakes are on the list to get done. thanks everyone for the advice and input. I will take it all into account. Zach
