Have you thought about doing a compression check?

Thanks for all the good suggestions. This afternoon I worked with it some. I disconnected the wiper and plugged the hole on the intake, ran it and still did it. Checked all around for a vacuum leak and no luck.. Took the carb apart and found nothing unusual there. It does have ball valve instead of a stock needle valve. It has all new gas lines but I haven't thought to check the fuel flow. I'll have to look at that next. Thanks again!

I did a compression check right after I brought it home 3 years ago. Since it hasn't been run more than an hour or so I haven't went back and checked again. I don't remember the exact numbers but they were even on all cylinders.

Well it looks like Dick M may have the winning solution! After checking everything out I looked at the gas flow. All new lines from tank to carb and the gas just barely trickles out. I've checked the fitting positions and they look proper. The only piece I didn't change was the shutoff valve. Looks like I'll be draining the tank and checking that out. Thanks again for your suggestions!
I'll let you know what I find.

I believe I finally found the issue! The shaft between the distributer and oil pump wasn't seating completely on the distributer end. the shaft was fitting a little snug and I thought it was locked in. Apparently it wasn't locking in. When I revved it up it would start slipping and popping/backfiring. Did a little file work on the shaft and it seems to rev up fine now. I found it when checking the time. went past the dimple in the timing gear and tried to back it up a little. Noticed the distributer rotor didn't move. Hmmmm.....
Thanks for all the help and suggestions!
