Does anyone have any info on the EZ Steer?

Not too open a can of worms , but I bought mine from Randy Gross, very happy with them.

I got one ready for a future project.
I hear good reports about them and if you vehicle is not concourse and you don't mid a few mods to make life easier then they seem to be the answer.

The way they are made it may take some boxing or similar to mount it correctly on a stock frame.
Obviously they were designed for hot rods but what the heck...

My uncle bought one for his 32 Ford & wasn't happy with it & sent it back. He then sent his original unit out for a rebuild & is very happy with the results.

Hewe, do a search on EZ Steer in the messages. You will find several discussions regarding it.
Do not confuse it with the F100/F150 steering conversion.

Be sure you don't confuse EZ Steer with the unit that Randy Gross produces. Randy's unit is excellent but you need to read the archives here and on HAMB about EZ steer.

Correction, yes I have a Unisteer setup and now my memory has been jogged, yes I have also heard bad stuff about the steering boxes but thought that it must have been all sorted out by now.

Not a thing, and that also goes for the 7 tooth box. My friend restored his steering a few years ago, and that really changed how the car handled.

Bought one of those E-Z Steer boxes several years ago. Installed it in a SW Fordor and after about 40 miles and 2-3 inches of slop in the steering wheel I sent it back. They sent a "revised" one - replacement, supposedly solving the problem. After another 40 miles and a few trips around the Texas countryside it had the same slop problem. I pulled it out, disassembled the guts to see if I could find the cause.

The internal thrust surface was not machined - as in the Thrust Surface was against raw rought casting and as the Trust Surface rubbed on the rough cast surface it would quickly wear down. It was the surface where the Two Tooth Sector Shaft thrust against the casting. Not only was it rough casting the surface was not even square to the shaft. The Model A 30-31 Steering Box has a Brass Washer in this position.

I sent the Box to my machinist friend and he Machined that rough cast surface smooth and square then built a custom brass thrust washer . Problem solved. After spending $600 plus for a steering box one does not expect to have to spend another $100 to get it right. ken

The unit is still sitting on the shelf. Might use it some day.

I put one of these 'quick fix' band aids on my '30 Coupe when the shimmy made life exciting. I found it to be 'just what the doctor ordered'. My shimmy went away and life was much less stressful. I would recommend this band aid to anyone who does not have the time, energy, knowledge or competence to 'properly' and correctly fix the shimmy problem.

Confusion understood. I should have been more specific. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Generically, I always respond to the initial thread, not some one else's remarks. In this case that would be "EZ Steer". No. Apparently I am confusing a Steering 'Damper' that I once had (which I thought was called an 'Easy Steer') and attached to my front axle, putting tension on to the parallel steering rod behind the axle. If what I have described is what we are talking about, then Yes, I found that it worked for me for several years.

But when you say "Steering Box", then I with draw my comment, as I fear that I have confused the unit I had (which was most definitely NOT a 'box') with another device that Hewe, Post # 1 was asking about. If it is a "steering box" Hewe is asking about, and not a 'steering damper', then I know nothing about it.

Once again, sorry for the confusion.

I found that the steering stabilizer was pretty handy at bending my tie rod, though it did keep the shimmy down. (It was on the car when I bought it, along with a converted 56 F100 steering box.) I took the stabilizer off, replaced the tie rod, set the toe in and adjusted the 56 box. From then on it steered almost like power steering. I have a 56 box in my roadster and a shorter pitman arm, can turn at the curb with two fingers before moving the car, 56 is not EZ steer, never owned one of those.

I have one of these kits, but I also have one of John Kovar's POS. That't the one I "advertised" in post #10 above.

I have one of the EZ STEER units here in the shop that you can have, just come pick it up.
It is one of the biggest disappointments in re pop model A parts that I have had.
If you want a great box with excellent service look up Mel Gross here in the model A section swap meet.
His steering box is F-100 engineering and a direct bolt on application for our model A's.
He is located in Montebello California.
I am running his product with a shortened pitman arm and couldn't be happier, no slack or play, self centering, tight and smooth.

To add about using a F type steering box. I have an F2, 1948 3/4 ton pickup that rides on 16 X 7 tires and even in stock form it steer real easy and can see why that conversion is so popular.

They are a cowl type. Lot of mods to install.
