Get an A-B-C rated extinguisher, and keep it in easy reach.

Dry chemical is best overall and Kidde is a good brand. Get one large enought to get the job done but small enough to get out and use fast.

why would a Model A Ford be a 'fire risk'? Some of the buildings they are kept in might be.

Some shows require an extinguisher. Dry chemical is the best all around for the car. Read how to properly use one as I have found many people don't.

Picked one up a walmart this summer, $20 I think. Mounted it on rh side inside cowl panel using existing trim screw, just in front of door opening (2 dr).
Peace of mind. Do a search also as this has been covered before.

Dry chemical leaves a big mess if you have to use it, I keep a Halon on the floor next to the seat riser by the seat adjuster knob, Halon is more$$ but makes no mess, I have worked on cars that have had fires, the mess from dry chemical was more of a problem than the actual fire damage

For the garage I keep 2 Co2, a small one (10lb), and a large one(30lb), the small one is for working--it has many small squirts, and I have used it to freeze things, once you use a dry chemical it is done--even if you only use a little of it, needs replaced or professionally recharged, I have them in the garage too, they are for use as a last resort--just before you run out of the building

^^^^ I agree with Kurt. I keep Halon in all of my cars and actually even have a couple in the garage near the electronic equipment. No mess if you ever have to use one! A little bit expensive, but my old Fords deserve the best that I can give them.

Well, as usual, I'm odd duck out.
I've always been told that Halon is by far the best agent.

I agree that Halon is the best. The next question is it better to spend money on one Halon or several dry chemical ones that can be spread out where they would be handy if you needed one. I went the later approach.

It never ceases to amaze me how someone can have $20K invested in a vehicle and then compromise on a $75 piece of safety equipment. As Jim said,

I dont usually post on the A forum, but this is a sore subject for me. I had a brand new Kidde this summer, and a fire under the hood on my 55. I was doing a compression test with the carb off. I forgot to empty the quart bottle the fuel hose was pumping in to. On number seven it overflowed and ignited. The month old Kidde would not fire in three tries. I also had a new marine grade extinguisher in the car. It put the fire out in one second. The Kidde came with a plastic holder that broke before it could be used. The marine grade extinguisher had a metal clamp/base. The marine grade was 14 bucks more, and it saved the car, the garage, and the truck parked along side just out the door. Spend a bit more, your goodies are worth it.

These are the kinds of experiences that tell the tale. I'm going to revisit my extinguishers tomorrow. Thanks for the post.

As stated in my earlier post, I mount a 2.5 lb Halon on the passenger-side kick panel and carry a 5 lb Halon in the trunk (the pics are of my '34). When parked in the garage, I set the 5 lb near the rear wheel where it's easily accessable. There's another 5 lb Halon on the other side of the garage near some electronic equipment. I've used dry chemical extinguishers before and don't like the mess. My career in R&D required yearly "hands on" fire extinguisher training, so in 34 years, Ive fought a lot of small fires with every type of extinguisher available.
