So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Morning .....
I made my weekly check on my cars in Winter storage and guess what.....I shaved off some Irish Spring Soap and placed shaved pieces on each Dryer Sheet in my '40. Made my check yesterday and the little bastards ate the soap on the sheets upfront and kindly left some poop ! Looking for Plan "B" now !! Thx....Mike |

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
I put good old fashioned baited mouse traps around my car. They like peanut butter and seem to go for that before getting into the car. So far so good.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Had the mice in my garage and then in my kitchen two weeks ago. They stole the bait off the snap traps and didn't set them off. Got some sticky traps and that was the end of them.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
I go all in. Sonic unit, mouse X pellets glue and regular traps. I then use mint mouse repellant in the car. From what I hear, the dryer sheets and irish spring both changed formulas. so far I have gotten one mouse in the glue trap and no other issues.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
I found out that the little bastards like solid, slab Styrofoam as well as Styrofoam peanuts. Had a pair of NOS aluminum heads sitting in the box of peanuts that they had previously been shipped to me in. Went to look at the heads again a couple of years after I put them in the garage on a shelf. Cardboard box was gnawed-open and the heads both had corrosion spots where the little frikkers had whizzed on them. They did the same thing with another box out there that had a previously-purchased (yet un-opened) mini refrigerator in it. Finally went to open and use the unit and found that the slabs of Styrofoam used to protect the outsides of the fridge had been gnawed-on so badly that the container was full of styro-dust and chunks. I tossed that one! DD

Put twist ties on the old fashion snap traps with the metal tang. They won't clean them off anymore. Coworker taught me that one has a very low fail rate.

What RalphM says about the 5 gallon bucket trap works! We set one of those up at the hunting cabin during deer season and we were catching mice every night. I was amazed because there was little or no sign of mice in the cabin. Made a believer out of me.

Next time, tie a piece of monofilament fishing line in a small loop around the bait on the snap trap. When they try to steal it, their teeth will snag the line and they will set it off every time. |

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
I had problem in barn, used pellets which they eat and take back to nest for the family. Also hang a bag of moth balls under hood of tractor so they don't eat wiring. Been doing it for 20 years and every now and then after winter I find a couple dead ones. Keep the pellets year round.

All you need is a 1/4 inch thick sheet of ice about 1 foot square with a 1 inch round hole melted in the middle.Next, sprinkle about 5-6 frozen peas around the edge of the hole. When the mouse comes to take a pea, kick him in the ice hole.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
I think keeping mice out of our cars is impossible. One of the local guys purchased four large cookie pans. He jacked up his car and put a sheet under each tire and filled it with waste oil. I don't know how it was possible, but somehow mice still got into the car!

I would be interested in knowing which traps they are stealing the bait from? I have not had that with the old wood ones, but have with the new ones. Guess they still haven't built a better mouse trap.

Based on what I have heard... and found in cleaning my Dad's garage out. Open antifreeze atracts them. one container had 5 of them in the bottom drowned.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
The new snap traps suck. They have a plastic bait platform that isn't very sensitive and I even tied bait to them and they didn't set them off. The sticky ones work if you don't mind the little basters suffering, I don't. Avoid using antifreeze if you have pets, they like it too.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
After conventional traps set with peanut butter rid my basement of rodents, repair of broken vent screens and plugging in several high pitch noise making devices has kept the critters out of my basement for the past 20+ years. Humans don't hear those devices, but animals do, including family pets, so don't use them inside the house, just where you don't want any animals to go. For my purposes then, knowing that bait attracts all animals, I only used that to get rid of them initially, and used the other means to keep them out.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
I tried dryer sheets and they used them for nesting material. While visiting the automobile museum in Norwich NY, I saw they had a little plate of mothballs on the floor of the cars, I tried a dish full of mothballs on the front and rear floors, so far it seem to work.

Here's the damage mouse pee does to metal. This is an otherwise very nice trunk lid.
Both upper - inside corners had nests.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Tinker, I use those victor traps. They are the best I have used, but it seems that the newer ones do not have the "hair trigger" that the older ones have, and you have to tweak the trigger a little. I was having the mice steal the peanut butter without setting off the trap. I dug out some older ones, and they worked within 10 min. of being set.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Mothballs always work for me - course the car has to be aired out when it comes out of storage. I also put some pellets under the car just for good measure.
When our house was being built, mice got in the HVAC ducts. I watched one go between the slats of a register - wouldn't have believed the space was wide enough. Wife didn't want me to use pellets for fear mice would die in the duct and stink. So I put traps under the registers - caught a few but didn't solve the problem. I finally told her either she let me use pellets or I put a snake down the ducts - she opted for pellets. |

I use the sonic units, and I like peppermint extract, the critters don't You have to renew the peppermint every month or so to keep it fresh. So far, so good. It's either that or mothballs, and the peppermint smells goods vs mothballs.

Bait - Formula is 4 to 1...That is, mix 4 parts oatmeal with one part plaster of paris. Place bait on a dinner plate or in a shallow pan. Imagine what happens in their gut when they eat this......Bottom line is, they die. Don't let your dog eat this stuff...

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
The only real remedy is to eradicate or at least reduce the mouse population in the area. I keep a constant supply of the rat blocks in every building in the farm yard. Of course they have to be inaccessible to pets and kids so I use a bait box in some buildings. The bait blocks are square with a hole through the middle so they can be spiked to the walls in the sheds. The bait is not cheap but still cheaper than the damage mice can cause to vehicles and machinery.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
For myself and other city boys, the task is not to eradicate a world full of rodents, but to deny them entrance to our buildings. I know, lots of barns and outbuildings are not possible to put up physical barriers, but I'm thinking you should be able to keep them out with sound barriers that they won't cross? Being that city boy with clean shoes, I don't really know how it is on a farm or a ranch, but I did have relatives with a cow barn that had gopher snakes for the vermin. I know that because my brother in law about skinned me alive for shooting his snake!

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Cats are better than nothing but not as good as poison. I remember pulling the 39 Ford into the workshop back in the 70s. We were shooting mice with pellet guns they were that numerous. Had plenty of cats too but it didn't work like poison does now. Rats are non existent in this yard and the mouse population is low. I might spend $20 a year on poison blocks. Cheap compared to the damage mice cause. Not to mention the risk of death from hantavirus.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
I never seem to get mice/rats in my garage so it is not a problem with my cars but the little F'ers get into the ceiling of my house late autumn most years and you can hear them running around at night. I think they come from the river as I have a stop bank (levy) behind my place. I usually chuck some of those square baits Ralph G mentioned, up into the ceiling cavity and you can hear them dragging them around for a couple of days.....then nothing for the rest of the year and no patter of small feet either. Our climate is pretty temperate so we probably don't get the problem to the extent you fellas do where the snow flies.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
my house cat is a mass murderer. he thinks its his job, goes out to go to work just like the rest of us. sleeps on the roofs of cars between working, then home after work exhausted from the hard day at the office. i was ok with the roofs until once i left my A roadster out because it wasnt supposed to rain, but it did. came home from work to see top fabric hanging down inside the car. closer inspection showed the evidence, muddy paw prints on the fender...next the hood...and the last jump to the roof must have startled him as he went right thru! it was an old top probably put on in the 60's, a little "aged" look to it, but when it was wet it must have been weak. damn, i liked that old top

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
We had a rat/mice plague here some years ago, farmers were putting 5 gal pails out with 6in of water in the bottom and a smear of peanut butter about 3 to 4 in below the rim on the inside. The mice/rats would try to eat the peanut butter, fall into the water and drown. They killed tens of thousands like that. It will work in your garages or barns as long as the water does not freeze. the water and peanut butter is safe if your pets get hold of it.
Another farmer I know used to put a bowl of plaster of paris alongside a bowl of water. He said the rats love to eat the plaster, then get thirsty and drink the water. The plaster then sets inside them , game over. Again you need water that does not freeze and make sure your pets don't consume the plaster. |

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Back on Page 1, Richard Crow suggests the "walk the plank" mouse trap. I agree 100%. Baited with a little peanut butter, it is very effective. Two tips: If your garage gets below freezing, add antifreeze to the water in the bucket (being careful of pets), and you may have to adjust the magnetic latch to make it release better.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
A friend has the barn cats, just a tiny bit of food to keep them home and a few places to get out of the wind and snow. Keeps covers on the good iron, farms and has grain stored but never has mice or rat problems.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Didn’t read all but I’ve had success w Tomcat bait! Don’t even put in the little bait feed box. Just put 2 it 3 blocks around 3 car garage in corners. They definitely eat it then go look for water & die usually outside if no water in garage. I’ve had success w Antifreeze in small low side pans like pie pans. They love the stuff ang go away & die. Both seem to keep out of car but w antifreeze I’ve seen smelled them dead inside more than not. Obviously not a good idea w pets!

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
There is no poison that selectively kills only rodents. All animals in the food chain are at risk, including animals that eat the poisoned animals.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Hawks, owls, eagles, minks... snap trap them mice. No worries there will always be more mice. Outside of roaches they will outlive us all.
Bucket method where it traps the mice with antifreeze is fine. Straight poison is bad. There is no benefit to poisoning mice or rats. They either smell your shop up for months when they die in the wall or they could poison something else. I've never had an issue seeing a rodent and putting a snap trap out with peanut-butter and not getting it the next day. Just keep traps loaded with bait. . It's funny as hell to see all the replies to my post ! The little buggers draw a lot of interest for sure. Someone mentioned moth balls and I've used them too, but no luck there either.
Thx....Mike |

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
My shop is located next to pasture land and we get them big fng rats! Made the mistake of leaving the garage door open recently and walked in there later that night after I closed the door and me and the rat met, later that night I put two sticky pads down w/peanut butter, one was over turned the next day and we never found the other one or the dead rat? Did find some fur but nothing else, we have 3 cars stored in that shop, plus my zero turn and a lot of stuff/parts in boxes, always leery of mice and rats.

ditto on the Tomcat bait. I wiped out the mice population in my house and garage and have seen no signs in over a year. i check on the blocks I've put around and not even a nibble since I wiped them out.

warning on sticky traps * * if you don't nail them to something lots heavier than the rat they will flip and flop all over your shop and leave a sticky, bloody, hairy mess. Ask me how I know this...

This trap has a tube to put in the peanut butter which is almost impossible for the rat to eat without setting the trap.

Sometimes you have to do a little bending of the trigger rod "thingie". Put two face to face, if they are eating one they step on the other. Also smear the peanut butter on the spring and other places. Cheap traps. Most sticky traps leave them alive and then you have to deal with that. But they do work. When I was living in Florida we would get fruit rats. Had a grapefruit, orange, and avocado trees. Think I would take out about a dozen a yr with rat snaps. Creepy rodents. Up here we have lots of nature around. Eagles (a week ago I was just watching 3 eagles eating a rabbit on the ice just outside my window), owls, minks, etc. So just not going to use poison personally. My neighbor likes those also 4dy. . I found using a piece of thin wire to tie a piece of bacon to the trigger would get them every time.they tug on the bacon and die I also smear some bacon fat on the trap near trigger they get comfortable being near then get brave.works for rats as well

I have a toilet I built a frame work to set on top of instead of the bucket. All you have to do is flush to get rid of the critters!

It absolutely can do that. The only water normally remaining in those pipes is the water in the bowl of your toilet. If you flush a live rodent, he's likely to want to continue living by climbing back up away from the water at lower levels, then fall right back into your toilet bowl. Don't let your wife read this post! In a related instance, I had a basement with a drainage pipe in the concrete piped directly to the storm sewer. Its cover screen became damaged, after which my basement was invaded by literally dozens of sewer rats. Trap the rats and cover the drainage pipe, no more rats.

Unfortunately, that's been my experience as well. On to the next solution.
BTW, the ultra-sonic devices don't work either (at least not in Minnesota). |

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Mothballs contain naphthalene. Not great to inhale, but not totally bad either. Recommended to not use them in the house. Sheds etc better then most stuff. If consumed it is poison. But they are designed to repeal, better then dryer sheets or soap.. So don't eat them or breath them too much. I know bacon is bad, I'll do that sometimes too. Only hurting me. Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Mice can breed year-round with one female able to produce five to 10 litters per year. With an average of six to eight babies per litter, a family of six mice can multiply into 60 over the course of three months.
Down south you have more snakes. Cold here, will put them in structures. It's a never ending conversion/story. If you see one, you have plenty more. |

Rodents can not burp.Give mice n rats Coca Cola. instead of burping they’ll bust a gut n die..? They love Coca-Cola.
Put some in a saucer or hub cap, they’ll lap it up. Dogs n cats can drink coke without causing them any trouble. |

Wives tale. Just as effective if you have a stray dog on a sheep farm, soaking sponges in bacon grease. Well that might work better.

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
A few comments from a Model A guy, if I may.... from a guy who had the entire NOS Lebaron top and interior kit for my Cabriolet (new in the boxes) ruined by the little %$##@&^!(*)&%^÷-%ers
First, ya gotta love all the trap ideas, some super engineering... And, also, best of luck with all those in-the-car repellants. However, killing them once they've gotten inside indicates that a fundamental problem has not yet been addressed: "What's this vermin doing living in my stuff?" Here's what seems most important to me: First: ONLY standard-issue 1/4" metal mesh called "hardware cloth" will work well enough to seal a building so tightly you can keep the mice out!!!! (They sell it by the roll at Home Depot, ain't cheap... and so it's pretty much impractical for barns... sorry.) Second: Microbes in mouse droppings can be terribly dangerous. Hanta virus is right up there with Corona... Be extra careful. Thirdly, and most importantly, and most horribly: Rats EAT mice... SO, If you have mice now, and you don't control them, you will EVENTUALLY have RATS!!!! It's a jungle out there, folks! Stay safe!!!! TallyHo John B.... |

Re: So much for Irish Spring and Dryer Sheets.....
Make ur choice on ‘how to’ based on ur convictions but arrive a a solution that kills them frequently w Success! All the repellant ideas if they work, only do for a relatively short period & they come back doing damage worse than before as they still hang around & multiply out of the repellant range! Even the electronic repellers only work for a time until they get use to them, I’ve seen enough droppings to know they were hanging around the electronic device w no effect after getting use to it. While I don’t have any outside cats because w have Coyotes in Pa. where my cars r, middle of 30 acres of woods. Coyotes eat the cats as fast as the cats eat the mice.l but in an environment w/o I’d have a couple hanging around in & out of garage.

Carbonation is what causes burping. So one would have to replace the flat Coke quite often! Sounds like a full-time job going around pouring out fresh Coke! |

In florida we had black racers (very fast hence the name). We always left them alone. They like mice and rat nests. Up here we have garter snakes in the summer. I don't see as many anymore as I did as a kid.
