Default Removing a radiator from a 35 Pickup/Panel Del

Can the radiator be removed from a 35 pickup/panel Del. without removing the grille shell?? I've just finished assembling the front end of a 35 panel restoration and now the radiator decided to leak from the fin area. I want to minimize the disassembly needed to get the radiator out if at all possible. Need actual experiences...good and bad!

Thanks

I changed the radiator in my 1939 pickup which is similar in construction to yours. I borrowed a friend and when the fan was out of the way, we got on each side of the radiator and lifted it up and out of the engine compartment. Just reversed the steps to replace with the new radiator.
Is that the radiator I sold to you a few months back?

I do not think you can remove the radiator without removing the grill shell, if I understand your question. At least I darn sure wouldn't want to try it. Shell fits over radiator and is bolted to radiator. Easy to remove bolts through radiator/fender/grill splash pan and lift the whole thing out as a unit. Of course you have to remove the radiator steady rods, hoses, and bolts that hold radiator to frame. Not too difficult a job.

Would someone like to break the tie? I really need input on this. There seems to be a lot of 35 pickup owners on this site. Haven't any of you taken the radiator out!!

I have a 36...pretty darn similar, just a bit thicker grill shell.

I say do either what Bill or Lawson says

But on my truck, I'd be removing instead of trying to wrestle the radiator out, and more important putting it back in

1) Since the top grill shell opening drops down over the radiator neck, you would have to remove the bottom grill bolts that attach the grill to the fenders, etc., and all the grill to radiator fasteners to raise the grill up to clear it. Effectively, you end up removing the radiator and grill as an assembly as described by Lawson. This is similar to 34 cars in that regard.

2)Alternatively, it MAY (emphasis on MAY) be possible to remove the radiator from the rear by removing all the grill attachment bolts, the steady rods, etc., and sliding the bottom back and down to clear the grill top opening, but I would NEVER attempt it. I visualize a lot of potential problems and imagine hearing some pretty colorful language.

My vote is with Lawson and Scott H.

Zimmco, Thanks, I forgot about the radiator neck!! I guess that clinches it!! I'll have to remove the radiator and shell as one unit. Damn!!!!!! Thanks to all for your replys.

I overlooked The radiator fill going through the grille shell. In your case, pull the grille.

That's funny or maybe ironic Don, because that same person wanted to buy a cowl vent lever that I had for sale with description and picture in ad here on swap for sale section. He asked me for more details on the lever which I sent to him. He finally bought the lever and after receiving it he said I sent the wrong lever. I asked him to explain exactly which lever he needed or expected to get from me and he didn't know.
