Default Henry's Made A Lady Out Of Lizzie

Group,

Found an old 78 record in my father's estate : "Henry's Made A Lady Out Of Lizzie".

Another hobby I have is restoring old records. I played this one today and it's a song comparing the Model T to the A. Interesting lyrics like : "Now have four wheel brakes".

The artist is Paul Johnson and the record label is : Perfect.

Should clean up pretty good using the record restoration software I have.

I have the same tune on a "Regal" 78; the vocalist is Irving (Isadore) Kaufman, "tenor, with orchestra".

Also have it on an 88-note piano roll, with lyrics along the right-hand side.

I snooped around a bit for info on ""Paul Johnson", but only came-up with a sports coach and the Gospel singer.

"Perfect Records" were a subsidiary lable of Pathe Bros., and most of their recording artists were likely more famous performers with "exclusive contracts" to other labels ( Victor, Columbia, Edison, etc), but were usually allowed to record for other labels if they did son under a pseudonymn...

It's a fun little song, written by Walter O'Keefe, that has a bouncy melody and witty lyrics, with topical references to President Coolidge...

" Since he's lifted up her face, she travels at an awful pace,
Henry's made a Lady out of Lizzie ! "

I don't know if it's the same version, but I've found some Ford songs at archive.org

This was the first version I ever heard of the song, some thirty five years ago.

It was recorded by Billy Jones and Ernest Hare - "The Happiness Boys", a popular vaudeville and radio team.

They are generally credited with having recorded the first "singing commercial", for Interwoven Socks in 1926.

My copy is Columbia Records #15223-D (145582), by Al Craver. Flipside, also recording #15223-D (145581), is "That Good Old Country Town Where I Was Born" sung by Al Craver and Charlie Wells. I inherited this disc from my grandparents, and I'm 68. I wish I had the ability to convert it to digital form and post it. I have listened to it many, many times.

Try YouTube.com. Type in Henry's Made a Lady ouf of Lizzie and you will find several versions of the song, including the piano roll version. I have a copy of the sheet music (fortunately my wife plays the piano) and it's a neat, catchy little song.

Tom,

One good software product comes from a company named : Diamondcut

This will allow you to take the output from your record player and feed it into your sound card on your computer. Clean it up, and then create a CD for your use.

Other products are available I'm sure.

for now it's Miss Elizabeth VanFlivver,

and she lives way up on Lincoln Avenue ...
Vince - now THAT's "rare".... the title is perilously close to "Henry's made a Lady... etc", but this is an entirely different song !

Wonder if there were any other recordings of this song ?

Thanks for sharing !
