Default oil pump rebuild

I rebuilt our oil pump for '30 engine and tested it today by putting it in a container of oil and hooked my drill up. Just checking, it worked well only when the drill was in REV. Is that correct??

Model A oil pumps are very simple. There isn't much you can do to mess them up. Just remember to make sure the spring is on the bottom. I don't know about REV on a drill. I would think either way the pump would pump oil, however I have never tried to use a drill to test my rebuilt pumps - they just work.

The oil pump is driven by the same gear and shaft that drives the distributor cam and rotor.

As viewed from above, when the engine is running the distributor cam and rotor turn counter-clockwise.

So if FWD on your drill is clockwise, REV must be counter-clockwise, the same direction as the pump would be driven by the engine

No, the pumps here suck oil from the sump via the bearings.

That’s correct! Did you make a big mess turning it with a drill ?

Model A oil pumps will even pump thin liquid . I test mine over my parts cleaner tub . There was some really good info on oil pumps in some of the early secrets of speed journals . Most if not all of the rebuild kits include a gasket for the bottom plate of the pump . I don't believe that Ford used this gasket . The lower gasket creates more area inside the pump . More area inside the pump slightly reduces pumping action . I only use the upper screen cover gasket .
