Fitting a '40 Wheel to 31 Column
So I scored a beauty original '40 Deluxe wheel from a fellow Barn'r last week and I was hoping to make it fit on my 31 Coupe. Still running the 4cyl so I need to use the spark advance/fast idle levers. I understand that I will need to figure out another way to make the lights work but will the horn still work the same way? With a horn rod? The wheel came with a nice original horn button.
Can anyone help me out? |

Re: Fitting a '40 Wheel to 31 Column
The taper is different. I once put a 42 Lincoln wheel on a model a column and it wouldn't go down as far as the model a wheel. So I beat it down as far and as tight as I could on the tapered key. I then tapped the center of the column where the horn rod usually goes and held the steering wheel in place with a bolt and lock washer. No working horn ring, but you can install an electric button somewhere.
And careful about those metal shavings that run down the inside if the column. They go into the light switch that now doesn't work. Oh and this question belongs on the HAMB. (disclaimer brought to you by the resto-police.)
