Maybe a little off-topic for this board, but please help me resist the urge to buy this car. Looks very original, with 337 inch flathead and three speed manual transmission. I would keep it stock; what are the big headaches on this make and year.

Very nice car. This body style, the Cosmopolitan Town Sedan was only available in 1949. The other "big" sedan was called a Cosmopolitan Sport Sedan. The Town Sedan body style was dropped after just one year. A picture of one is shown on the cover of the Sales Brochure together with the "small" regular Lincoln Sport Sedan.

They are harder to find parts for. There are a lot of Lincoln specific parts on the Cosmos. The Baby Lincolns share a few more parts with the Mercury but not a lot more.

That one looks to be in pretty good shape. I like the overdrive set ups in those.

Lot of memories here, my dad bought a new one in 49, It was a black 2 door, 3 speed over drive, it was a great vehicle drove it for 10 years , never any trouble with it. Made the trip to Florida from upstate NY several times, the car I learned to drive on. Good luck

I don't know about drawbacks of this model, but read somewhere this is the rarest one.
Some kid in Ohio drove one all summer as a go to work car & beat on it .....seemed to take a lick'n & kept on tick'n. That's the only one i ever saw other than your post.
When was the last time anyone here saw one?

Have seen this Town Sedan several times that belongs to a dentist in my area at car shows.

This is a rendering of a Town Sedan version on the (baby lincoln) chassis.
It is out of the Lincoln/Mercury shop manual and was never built.

drolston: IMO, the color is the major negative. Not appealing. Very hard to find parts.

That engine was also used in the larger Ford trucks. I have a friend with a 49 or 50 dump truck that has the 337.

As I understand it, although it was basically the same engine the Lincoln was different in that it had hydraulic lifters and possibly some other features not shared with the truck engine.

I can’t provide any tips or buying advice for a Lincoln of this sort, but they look gorgeous. I’d welcome one in my collection! That 337 V8 should be reliable and torquey. If the car checks out mechanically and drives well, why not buy it? They’re pretty rare, so you probably won’t see one any local car shows.

I had a 50 Baby Lincoln and it was a fun car to have. It was smooth and rode real nice. But as others have said, it is hard to find parts for. And they can be pricey. Kanters has a lot of engine internals. I believe Austins Speed Shop makes aluminum intakes and heads. There is a disc brake conversion for the front, but that is about it. The cosmopolitan is its own animal.
But, that car looks in great condition. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

That year was the only use of that particular body. FoMoCo had wanted to use it for the Mercury cars too but the differences were to great for them to tool up for that. This design was discontinued for the 1950 model year due to sales not being what they were hoping for. It's a one year only car for sure. Due to that I guess you could consider them to be somewhat rare but they sold 7,302 of them. The Lincoln Lido Coupe for 1951 had around 4,000 produced so it would closer to being a rare car.

They were very quiet an smooth cars to drive. The hydraulic lifters did a lot to keep them so quiet. The 337 big truck motors were solid tappet types so they are different. The Hydramatic transmission was new in 1949 but worked well enough. I'd prefer the heavy duty overdrive that the Lincoln above has.

Here is a picture of the remains of a 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Town Sedan that was destroyed in a garage fire while the car was being restored. It is probably the only one of it's kind that finished up in Australia. A very sad end to what would have been a very nice car. I don't know of any other examples of this model in Australia. This remains of this car are in a private collection that were once lovely old cars.
