Default Type nuts used for 42-48 ignition coil wires

I have several 42-48 ignition coils. There seems to have been two types of nuts used that held the wire on the two top terminals. One was a regular hex nut while the other is what I'll call a tube nut for lack of the correct terminology. It is a round tube, about 1/4 inch long, with the center hole threaded. It is designed to be tightened or loosened by fingers OR by a screw driver slot cut across the top end od the nut. It is brass. Which if either is correct? Anybody have a couple of the tube type they would get rid of? I would post a picture but have forgotten how to do that. Lawson Cox 770-784-0507

I've seen both types on supposed original / NORS parts. In my case, the nuts didn't interchange.

Lawson, the so called "tube nut" is the only concourse correct choice.

Since I'll never be accused of anything approaching concourse standard, what is the guiding reference? The Early V8 publication?

Benson Ford Research Center in Dearborn, MI.

I'd hazard to say that nearly anything and everything can be sought out there if one has the time as well as the patience.

No interchange? Simple enough...
Coils were produced with both #8 as well as #10 threaded studs. With respect to '42 -'48, I do not know the time frame nor the reason this was so.

Factory installed coils in '39 & '40 utilized (only) #8 studs. Service parts were supplied in both #8 and #10.

So I only found one barrel nut, and it was on a helmet coil.
Tried to put it on a 47 coil, and it didn’t fit. Threads are different as Kube stated above.

I wish I could tell you guys what was "concourse correct" size for '42 - '48 but that's outside my expertise.

Ralph. Yes, that's what I am looking for. I will see what size the stud/nut are, and report. THANKS

whether correct or not, i like the look of the tube nuts. another sort of unique ford only thing, and if you drop one, its easier to see if it rolls into no mans land under the bench

The thread per inch change may be due to different suppliers to Ford. Ford generally always had more than one extra supplier for electrical parts.

If they are # 10, they could be either coarse or fine thread ?

Thanks a lot for the quick and educational responses on a bit of Ford minutia. I can always count on you guys and gals to come through when I ask for help. I have tried to be of help over the years, and hope I have contributed a little to the hobby. I'm slowing way down physically and can't piddle like I used to, but still enjoying the hobby and friendships acquired over the years.
god Bless.

I've seen these "tube" nuts in both brass or bronze color or shiny like stainless. Also, some knurled and some smooth. Which of these, if any, were original ?

Ford used both 8-32 and 10-32 sizes, however as mentioned above most were 8-32’s and most aftermarket and service replacements had 10-32. Most of the originals are nickel or cadmium plated brass, but I have encountered many on service parts that were plain brass. The 42-48’s also used a special washer beneath the nut on one of the studs to retain the resistor block on top of the coil.

I can only answer with authority for '39 - '40. Those were solid brass, no knurling whatsoever.
