Murphys Law...or no good deed goes unpunished !
So someone here pointed up that I've two right hand waterpumps on my '36 LB engine. I thot..long as it works, what the hay. Looking at these water pumps, I notice grease zerks. Hm, as this car/engine has sat inside for many years...with no maintenance, thot I'd grease those zerks! Well , gave the left (right) pump a few squirts with grease gun. Same with right pump. Mind you...NO leaks prior to greasing. Started engine and Murphy hit the fan with coolant Why couldn't I have left the preventative maintenance alone?
Now for my question...if a little grease started a 'little' leak....will a lot of grease make the leak worse or stop it And, where does this grease go inside the pump anyway to make it leak?? Any/all helpful suggestions appreciated! |

Those early waterpumps will split the housings if you are too 'energetic' with the grease gun. The castings are very thin.

Re: Murphys Law...or no good deed goes unpunished !
Those pumps only need a very small amount of 'low temperature' grease to provide a thin film of lube between the pulley shaft and bronze bushing. A few squirts was probably two too many. The excess amount goes into the cooling system and if it's high temperature grease, will not melt, and can clog the tubes in the radiator. You may have moved the shaft/seal slightly allowing coolant to pass through. Try moving the pulley in and out some (by hand) to see if you can reestablish the seal. After market water pumps were all usually made as left side pumps with threaded temperature bulb mountings. The left side pump can be used on right side of engine with threaded plug in place. There were threaded zerk fitting holes on both sides of each pump so you could put the zerk to the outside hole and install a threaded plug in the other side. Unless you are building a high point show car, you don't need the original type pumps that had no provision for temp bulb mounting on right side pump.
If you can't stop your pumps from leaking, it may be time to send them to Skip Haney for rebuild.

My cat jumped up on the bed, got in my face, and was purring so loud she sounded like a flathead running with straight pipes. Then I noticed my smart phone was blinking with some type of message. Couldn't get back to sleep so tuned in to Fordbarn. I think I'm addicted.

low temp grease is also known as freezer grease, used in the food industry inside freezers

Re: Murphys Law...or no good deed goes unpunished !
THANKS to all !
I'll go 'wiggle' the leaking pump shaft...If it ever stops raining (hm..'it never rains in CA!) righard crow, If I can not get this leak to stop, and if I can not locate a rebuilt copy...I just may PM you for help..thanks much. Skip Haney sounds like good backup. Isn't there anyone that does that rebuild on the left coast? |

I'll second that. Two later V8 pumps in one USPS Priority flat rate box. Skip had them in two days from NH. I had them back in a week.

You can't beat those Postal Flat Rate Boxes, especially if you have something heavy like shocks or water pumps. Or if you are shipping across country. The Postal Zones have no effect on the rates.
If you are shipping something light, or to a close address, you probably are paying too much postage with the Flat Rates. MIKE |
