Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
Restore the ball size on the shifter, and the gates in the forks. That will take care of it. Also, the longer the shift handle, the looser the shift will feel.

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
Weld up the slot and file it back to fit the hardened pin.

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
Ole Don, can you elaborate on what tool to use to file the slot after welding? I have one that needs closing up and am not sure how to accomplish getting the slot back to a uniform size. I was thinking it might be a job for a machine shop.

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
In addition to restoring the slot in the shifter, the pin could be worn as well as the hole for the pin in top of shift tower.

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
My friend with a Bridgeport mill cuts new slots in levers for me after welding them up. Accurate and perfect parallel sides.

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
Did you remember to put the pin in that aligns the lever? If it is missing it may be in the transmission and you had better find it before the gears do.

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
for the shift lever slot take a drill bit set & try a bit that fits tight in the slot use the chuck end not the cutting end.now reverse the bit drill the tower to that size .now reverse the bit again & push the chuck end in measure & cut it to the lenth needed use a die grinder to cut the bit. or have the sloth welded & then bring to a machine chop & have a new slot cut between the welding & machine work expect to spend over a hundred dollars

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
The pin is not really a precision item ,we did a 29 Chrysler that the shift was all over the place ,we migged up the sides of the slot then recut it with a cut of wheel, nice shift after that

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
Checked all the different problems you guys thought it could be and it turns out the hole in the tower is very worn this shift tower is a 40-7222 and is called a slant back style the other tower I have is a 38-7222 it shifts great but the shifter fork is not the same size so I thought maybe someone might make an oversized pin to repair this problem or find a shift tower from someone on the barn and just replace it thanks Tom 518 573 7447 if someone has the part

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
Unless i"m mistaken, that "shifter fork that is not the same size" is the valuable later part used to put stronger, later model gears in the transmission. Don't lose it.

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
I suspect that you meant to type that you have a 68-7222 shifter housing. This could be used on your 32-35 gearset with one change. You would have to replace the B-7100 low/rev gear with a 67-7100 gear (has straight cut gear teeth but a larger diameter fork flange) to match the larger low/rev fork in this tower. Unless someone has changed out the 2nd/high fork, it will already be correct for your gearset. Lastly, the 68-7222 tower will require that you open up the hole in the transmission cover sheet metal to clear the top of the upright tower.
Don’t be tempted to grind the tips of the existing low/rev fork in the 68 tower. You could make it fit your early type gear fork groove but the fork tips would look like toothpicks when you got done grinding. Quote:

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
Badassfrombadaxe: Did you ever get a reply regarding a source for this part, i.e. B-7206 Guide Pin? I'm taking a transmission apart right now and will need a replacement. Thanks!

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
You can use a b-7155 pin and cut it down after installation

Re: 36 ford transmission shifter very slopy
That's was my 'plan B' 35fordtn. Mac VP also suggested it but said 'plan A' should be to try and reuse the original pin (presumably since it's tapered at one end). Mine is bent slightly so I'll see if it can be straightened out first. Thanks!
