Default "Ford" lever shocks - Need Help

I found a set of four lever shocks marked Ford Hydraulic and built in Chicago. I am told marketed by Chicagoan Pete Buciak. Long since dead he advertised years ago under the name “Shocks by Pete”.

My question is they are very very tight and only seem to work one direction and not rebound back on their own. I drained the oil which was clean and fresh and rinsed one of them out with light solvent. Refilled and still the same.

Has anyone had one completely apart to tell me how they work and why they are so tight ?

I can not answer your questions, but want to pass on some info.

I had John Holland rebuild mine. Before I sent them to him, he had me check how they are marked. I believe if I remember correctly he would not work on ones marked Chicago they are aftermarket and not very good. I think he said they are not rebuildable. Call him if you want to double check, he will talk/help you, very nice guy. He does not do computers, email, textin.

Have to call him - John Holland (330-483-3896) (Ohio

Those are a different design from the originals. Same with the ones sold by Snyders and Brattons, those will not be able to be rebuilt, only "originals" and Snipe shocks are rebuildable .

" and not rebound back on their own." I am pretty sure A shocks don't rebound on their own, I beleave they just dampen the bounce both ways, up down.

when you said you drained the oil. I take it you mean you drained the oil out of the reservoir. you can NOT drain the oil of the chamber without taking them apart. the shocks do not return to center on their own. i don`t know which ones but some of the reproduction shocks have a sealed chamber. so if you put oil in the reservoir the oil will NOT go into the chamber. and they are not rebuildable.

Re: Shock fluid
Define move fine.

A working shock would need to be in a vice and would very very slow with a lot of force using a normal shock arm. That is with the valve down in the operating range.

If you can hold a shock body and move the arm the shock is only for decoration, it does not work.
