Re: 1939 Ford Windshield regulator gears
Has anyone done a swap of gears? I've got 2 windshield regulators. One is original and the cast gear is trashed. The other has been repaired but when they reassembled it (with rivets) one arm is off by one tooth with respect to the other arm. I've got replacement gears but I've never seen instructions on how to do this.
Any thoughts? |

Re: 1939 Ford Windshield regulator gears
I bought one of those gears about a year ago. I installed it in my '39 regulator with good results. I ended up drilling out the rivets which serve as the pivot points for the two arms of the regulator, then drilled out the rivets which holds the replacement gear to the arms. I used aluminum aircraft rivets (1/8" dia) to install the new gear onto regulator the arm. I then used .250" dia. bolts and nuts with small bushings on them to replace the original pivot point rivets. If I remember correctly, the shoulder on the original rivet is about .280" diameter. You could probably just drill the holes up to .312" dia. and use 5/16 bolts as well. I had to use a small file to re-work a couple of teeth on the new gear as it would bind a liitle bit. Not a big deal. Works very smoothly now.

I took a look at my rebuilt regulator and the replacement gear was cut not cast. I've never seen another like it. Rather than having the raised ridges cast in, fingers of the same height/width as the cast teeth were cut into a disc and then bent at right angles at the correct intervals. This makes the gear much stronger than the cast version. I wish I could take a picture and post it but I can't get the camera under my dash to show it. When I pull it out to replace it, I'll post a picture. |

Re: 1939 Ford Windshield regulator gears
I had to do some minor filing on mine too but it was no big deal. Worked smoothly after that.

Re: 1939 Ford Windshield regulator gears
I have seen gear on eBay recently. It now comes with rivets to make installation easier. When I did mine a few years ago I had to improvise for the special rivets. I too had to " Doctor" the gear to make it mesh smoothly.

Re: 1939 Ford Windshield regulator gears
I searched under "1939 Ford" per what Marko39 suggested and found it, but I'm not seeing another one. Here is the title of the ebay auction I bought my gear from: "1939 Ford Passenger car Windshield regulator gear - now with the rivets (4)" The auction number was 193856430627. The seller was "chevi-shop" per what maneri suggested. I'd try contacting Chevi-Shop and seeing if he has more.
