Which sender are you trying to repair? The single terminal one is the actual Temperature sender and the one with two terminals is just a switch that goes open between the two terminals when it gets 'too' hot. You can check the operation of the single terminal sender by shorting the terminals of the two terminal unit together. This will help you determine which unit is actually faulty.

I have heard of a guy who removes the crimped top part on a lathe to get access to the internals and then solders them back together once repairing and cleaning the contacts is completed.

I have done this and it worked. Check out post #5 and on on this thread. As I say in the thread, I was just fooling around and wasn't too careful with my work, so it doesn't look the best. If you are a bit more careful, you should be able to a better job.

Jack. The 49-51 Shop Manual electrical layout shows two temp units. The passenger side is a single terminal, (gives the signal for engine temp) and the drivers side has two terminals. This one is a switch that opens to break the circuit, thus causing the temp gauge to read full hot. A cross over wire connects the units, and the second terminal on the drivers side has a wire that connects to the temp gauge. The system is designed to read HOT if the circuit becomes disconnected, thus failsafe to a degree. No pun intended.
