Mystery High Compression Head
I bought a 28 engine at a swap meet last month A673===. The head has no name or anything on it just a casting mark C15 which could mean March 1st 1935 so I just thought replacement head . But when I pulled it off the combustion chambers look like a police head shape , But no big B on it or any sign that one has been ground off .
So my Question is does anyone know who made this head ?? I will try to post pictures of it |

Re: Mystery High Compression Head
John, that is a low engine number, just where did you get it, UK or Continent?
Is it the standard bore, or small bore? I thought the s.b.'s had a different combustion chamber to standard bore? Some of the earliest Model A's [Detroit] were sent off to Europe for the Dec. '27 showings. Cheers |

Re: Mystery High Compression Head
Tudor I may have confused the Issue but there are 3 more numbers after the A673*** so it checks out on Vinces site as November 1928 . It is standard Bore 40 hp engine . I bought it at a UK Swap meet We have cars from all over the World in the UK it is probably from the USA but who Knows It's not from Canada as it has no CA number.
The Smallbore engine indeed has a smaller cobustion chamber but it out lines the smaller piston in the chamber so it's not one of those . Plind I think that casting number on the head point's out that the head was made in 1935 . did they sell the smallbore engine in Denmark ? I know they did in France and Holland JOhn Cochran |

Re: Mystery High Compression Head
England had a small bore in their Model A's to lower the tax on them. For some crazy reason the auto tax was based on the size of the bore. And I thought we had crazy taxes in this country.

Re: Mystery High Compression Head
The English smallbore AF engine has a 3" bore, to compensate for the poor performance they upped the compression ratio and fitted 4,55 to 1 gears in the rear axle.
AS Tom Say's All for a crazy tax!! Then other European countries thought what a good idea!! and sold them including France ,Holland , Germany and Ireland Just shows what happen's when goverment's get involved in car production . Have we learned anything ??? I better stop now or this thread might be seen as a political rant instead of a search for info about a High Compression head I've found. |
