picked this one up last night...
Still pretty new to model a's. frame has been restored and so has drivetrain. Couple of questions:
1. I know its a Murray and thats its a 1930 but is it a slant windshield? 2. how can I tell what is safety glass? Any help on anything is greatly appreciated! Geoff |

Re: picked this one up last night...
Looks like a good 1931 slant windshield to restore. Both the Murray and Briggs look alike on the 1931 slants. I also have one, but haven't looked to see if mine is Briggs or Murray.
BTW, this was during the depression and slow sales, so my 31 slant has an engine and frame number from November 1930. |

Re: picked this one up last night...
A good trick to determine plate or laminate is to hold a flame from a lighter or candle up to the glass and observe the image of the flame reflected. If you see two its likely laminated glass. If one image it's likeley plate glass.

Re: picked this one up last night...
roll dows the windows and look at the top edge of the glass, you can see if its two pieces sandwiched together with celluloid in between or one smooth piece of glass
you may have a small "bug" in the lower passenger side of the windshield for safety windshield glass look on the firewall under the data plate, there may be a makers tag there indicating who made your car if not, let me know as there are a few other places where you can determine who made the body,i will send photos of where to look tom |

Re: picked this one up last night...
No running board brackets. Those are riveted on, so usually not removed unless someone has hot rod in their mind. Was this a rescue from a Rat Rod guy?

Re: picked this one up last night...
Great advice guys! I'm excited to work on her tonight.
The man I bought her from had planned for a rat rod but I sure am glad I rescued her. I heard its been sitting since 1974 in a barn. paint and wood are decent and way better than I thought I would find for the money. It does have a murray plate on the fire wall but haven't investigated it further yet. The radiator shroud is a 31 but who knows if it was replaced. Geoff |

Re: picked this one up last night...
What the guys are looking at when they say '31 is the fact that the slant window didn't come out until after early 1931. The first 4 doors in '31 were straight windows so it couldn't even be a "transition" model.

Nice find! Did the fenders come with it? Good luck with the rebuild. Bob

Re: picked this one up last night...
Both Murray and Briggs slant windows are 31's, not 30's, and both have arched side windows. The Briggs have D nuts under the floorboards, the Murrays have caged nuts. Briggs have the "Briggs Bug" stamped into the body dash rail, dead center, underneath the dash panel. I have also seen Briggs' name stamped on the rear quarter window riser housing. Is it a flat firewall or indented?

Re: picked this one up last night...
you're lucky you have the rear valance on the car....they are unique to slants and very hard to find. I hope you have the rear fenders, as they are unique to slants too. If not, Berts in Colorado might know where some are.

Re: picked this one up last night...
I have a March build '31 slant, 160-B, flat firewall. Briggs bug on front door window filler brackets & have "D" nuts throughout car. Since you have the interior partially out, check the upper rear corners of body where the rearmost wood bow above rear window is linked to the side tack strip nailer rails. Those brackets, ( flat steel links) are stamped with a 1/2" tall letter"B" with a smaller "m" in top of the B, and a smaller yet, "Co". in the lower part of the "B". ( Briggs Manufacturing Co.) I'm happy to see you've got the front window riser mech's. The double arm type. Hard to come by these days.

Re: picked this one up last night...
Unfortunately, I did not receive the fenders for it. I'm really hoping to find them in Hershey this year. Sounds like they may be a tough find
The firewall on it is not indented so I took the owner's word that it was a 30. The valence is in great shape. Thanks, Geoff |

Re: picked this one up last night...
the rear fenders are different from other sedans in that they have a small jog along the inner seam, and there is a dimple in the inside skirt. It would be easy to see what I'm talking about with a photo, but I do not have one. Maybe someone here does. If you can get someone near you to show you, then you will be able to spot them instantly in a pile of sedan fenders.

Re: picked this one up last night...
Thanks for the info, would you happen to know what the two 3/4" holes on the passenger side cowl are for? they are lower than the cowl light hole.
