AOD Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
I'm installing a 302/AOD combo from a '83 van in my '54 Ranch Wagon. I have the factory plug from the van harness. I believe the NSS is just a pass through switch that when the trans is in neutral or park the power coming in from the ignition switch is passed onto to the starter solenoid. Both of the wires on the plug for the NSS are the same color - pink with black and there location jives with the diagram I've attached. The other 2 wires are for the back up lights. One is black and the other purple. One should be 12 volts coming in and the other 12 volts out when the trans is in neutral but I don't know which is incoming hot and which is out going hot to the lights. I can barely see the switch on the trans so I really can't get a test meter to it to sort things out. Can anyone tell me which wire should be hot coming in? or do I have this all wrong. If so please enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

Your application only requires the correct wire(s) placements for ON/OFF. Does this make sense?

Re: AOD Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
Rewiring the entire car so it will need splices somewhere. I'll try and locate a factory wiring diagram for an '83 E150 van. I'm assuming that the in and out wires for the NSS doesn't matter as to which pin is in and which pin is out but I'm guessing that it does for the back up lights.

Re: AOD Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
See if this thread makes it more understandable -
https://www.fordmuscleforums.com/thr...-trans.509266/ No need to find a schematic. The SWITCH itself is a combination NSS and BU LAMP SW.

Does this one help? If not I have Fox body mustang detailed wiring diagrams I can check.

From the link: I've checked both Mitchell and Alldata, both list the wire colors for 88 town car the same, @ neutral safety switch... Start in; white\pink Start out ; red\light blue This is the info I'm looking for since I have the factory plug. Unfortunately my colors are different. I'll see if the shop that a buddy used to work for can look it up on Alldata for me.

Re: AOD Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
... hold on a minute ...
This is becoming far too complicated. You have the connector and leads cut from the donor wire harness, correct? The PIN OUT is shown in the ILL you posted. You would splice your wire harness lead to one pin (in) and the other pin (out) would be to complete whichever circuit (NSS - BU LAMP). It (NSS) is simply an on/off switch in this swap.

Re: AOD Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
An on off switch really doesn't need to identify for in or out. There is no polarity issue and no cross wiring issue between the two sides of the dual switch as long as you can identify which side is which.
It would be interesting to know how this switch functions though. If it is a spring loaded push type switch or if it is a rotary switch. Most are rotary types so that both park and neutral will function the start circuit (two positions). The reverse light part of it only operates in one position. With only 4-pins, I would figure it to be a rotary type switch unless a push type has multiple internal switch connections. |

The NSS and backup light switches are electrically independent from each other, they just happen to be in the same housing. It's only a couple on/off switches, don't overthink it. Just ID which connector pins are for each side (NSS or Backup) and connect the wires for each one. |

Re: AOD Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
OK. I know which 2 pins are for the NSS and which 2 are for the back up lights. What I don't know which is in and which is out for each. My guess is that it doesn't matter for the NSS switch since its a pass through switch and both wires on the factory plug are the same color. But the back up light wires are 2 difficult colors. Most switches work regardless if which side is in and which side is out but not sure on this since the switch is inside the trans. Still trying to track down a factory wiring diagram for a 1983 E150 van to verify which color wire goes to which pin.

Re: AOD Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
The early switches are push button types. This link is for early AOD type switches.
http://www.wiring-wizard.com/Diagram...fetySwitch.JPG One wire is a power wire for the back up lights and the other is the line to the lamps. I would say that it still doesn't matter which terminal of the switch part for back up lamps is used since this is not a ground related circuit. |

Re: AOD Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
I finally found a diagram which shows which pin is in and which is out. The colors listed aren't the same as my pigtail but the important part is which pin is which. Thanks for all the help.

Re: AOD Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
All hooked up although temporarily until the entire rewire gets done. Reverse lights come on in reverse and only cranks in neutral and park. PITA to get the plug onto the switch, not much clearance for your hand. The pigtail from the donor vehicle is frayed. I either need to replace the contacts/wires or get a new socket. Ron Francis lists one for 30 bucks and change plus shipping. Might be the way to go when when I completely rewire the wagon. Thanks again for all the replies.
