Default 1929 VIN on frame?

I have a 1929 Model A Roadster with a build date on the firewall of July 1929. I know 1930 and 1931 cars had the Vehicle Identification Number stamped on the frame (as well as on the engine original to the car of course). I don't know if the 1929 frames were stamped though. If they were stamped, were all frames stamped, or just some of them - and was the stamp location in the same general location as the 1930 and 1931's. Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks.

Bill

All the frames should have the original engine number stamped in the frame, except I understand some Canadian frames have no number stamp.

So the way I understood this, the stamp on the frame inside the car on the drivers side in front of the seat is the assembly date and location. The stamp on the firewall is the gas tank manufacture date. The engine number stamp was on the frame under where the cowl rests on the frame. So, which one is considered the VIN?

The number on the frame was originally the same number as the engine. That is the number that was used as the VIN. If your engine ever was changed, then it may be that the engine number is now different.

The number near where the driver sets his left foot is the body number and assembly plant code. My 1928 Phaeton has a tank date of 8-27-28 and the body number is TC 476, so this is the 476th Phaeton body assembled at the Twin Cities plant that year. Low body style number because just how many people want an open car in a cold state?

Vince has the official information about this on his web site.

My 29 roadster has the # stamped into the frame, and is not visible without taking the body off of the frame. the serial # is on the frame about where the Lt ( drivers side ) front cowl mount is. I never did find a # stamped into the firewall. If I remember correctly, the same # is stamped into the top of the transmission, and should match the frame # if the car has the original trans.

Here is my Canadian vin stamped into the cross member in front of the seat riser. Can't be seen without removing the riser.
