Default Removing steering wheel

I have a large crack at the base of the steering wheel which I'm going to try to repair. I have a the puller and I have taken the horn ring off. I know the bolt holes to attach the puller are 5/16 but I'm not sure if it's fine or course thread. Also the wire for the horn that comes up the shaft can that be pulled down from the bottom somewhere so that the end of the puller will fit into the shaft. I'm working on a 49. Thanks in advance.

You do not need to pull the wheel to repair it. Use files and sandpaper to Vee out the crack, be sure to clean the metal that is exposed , and I have had success with JB Weld.

There is a wire you unplug at the bottom of the steering box and the wire pulls out with the horn ring. While you can repair the wheel in the car i think having it out will make it easier. I believe the hole are fine thread.

if you opt to remove the wheel.to make it easier to feed wire back through shaft.I would tie a piece of string on to the wire on box end before pulling wire it will ease the putting the wire back through.
