I was simply trying to illustrate what a guy can do to a cheap crappy stand to make it better.

I was not and made no mention of entering the debate of how to correctly hang a 32 to 48 ford V8 on a modern style engine stand.

Several examples of flathead adapters from Yahoo search. I use the HF four legged stand, works fine and is stable. If you want a crank type go with the Summit style.

Ross, I have that stand from HF, it works well and is plenty strong enough (I have a Y-Block on it, a little heavier than a flatty). But (theres always a "but" isn't there) the front legs a quite wide and would not fit between the legs of my hoist. Of coarse I find this out after I pull the engine and it's hanging by a chain. I finally had to set the engine on the ground and rethink. Finally extended the hoist to the max to reach. Used my fattest friend for ballest...

I have a couple of Stumpy's engine cradles, good stuff...
I have one similar and that would be my biggest complaint. Can be a bear getting the engine from the hoist to the stand. Bought a 2ton chain fall now just need to build an a frame to hold it.

Try craiglist too as people buy hoist and stands for a one project then sell it.
