Default king pin assembely

I am working on the 30 coupe. It needs new king pin bushings. I purchased a complete kit including new pins(spindle) from Snyder's. I have pressed the bushings in and reamed with the correct size reamer. Pins go in with little drag, no binding. The question I have is about adding the shim if necessary. I have seen two diagrams showing two different locations. The first was under the thrust bearing on top of the spindle and the second pic was between the top of the axel and the underside of the top of the spindle.

Pictures would be helpful.

thanks
bob

The shim(s) go between the thrust bearing and the spindle. See picture.

If you have Les Andrews book there is an entire section on kingpins..there are diagrams on pages 1-212 and 1-213.

I had to use 3 shims on each of my king pins to get the weight of the truck to be solely supported by the thrust bearing against the kingpin flange.

The purpose of the shim washers is ensure that the roller bearings carry the vertical loads from the wheels. If not shimmed correctly, the king pin lock bolts incorrectly carry the vertical loads.

Another purpose of the shim washer is that the reproduction bearing out there on the market is smaller in thickness than the originals...therefore the addition of the shim washer to get the same thickness as the original.

Also to, these same bearings were originally used in the 7-tooth steering columns and must adjust for that when restoring one today unless you use a good original.
