Default Dashboard - Nothing left to fix

Well, first it was the fuel gauge that didn't work...overhauled it.

Then the ammetter was inop... replaced it.

Then the speedometer stopped working.... overhauled it.

The light started blinking... repaired wiring.

And yesterday I put in a new distributor cam...re-timed the ignition and.....nothing. Just crank, crank, crank. (what's that you ask? Is there a molten puddle of starter on the floor? )

So... out comes the VOM. Ignition tests like the switch is not on or off...no continuity or ground between the red wire and the points. Huh???

I figure the red wire has come off the switch...so... off with the dash.....only to find that the red wire is quite secure...but the armored cable is not part of the switch anymore!!

The cable had pulled out of the key switch housing and it looks like the only thing holding it is the serrations on the cable end.

Found that at 10pm last night after 14 hours of "playing" in the barn. Too tired to think it through any further so I'll be addressing that tonight. I can't have my ignition system falling apart on the road.

But, once fixed... there is nothing left on the dash to break. unless it is "again?"

And... of course.. I forgot to ask.

Has anyone else had this happen?
Is this a common problem?

The few that I've worked on have been a very tight press fit. I know some guys that repair them drill a small hole in the switch, then thread it and use a small set screw.
