bad vibration on 36 sedan
1936 has a bad vibration at 45 mph, literally makes the steering wheel shake. Push in the clutch and it almost goes away. Jacked up car ran it in gear up to 50 mph with not any real vibration. I was advised it could be pinion bearings--question what noise would those bearings make? and could they cause such a vibration. Yes I checked the tires for bumps, knots, etc

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
Help us out a little with more detail about the vibration... the whole car? wheel related? drivetrain related? sound? was it wearing a hoodie?

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
Can you feel it if your sitting still and rev the engine? Or is it only when the car is in motion.

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
if its pinion bearings, the diff will be so hot you can hardly touch it. i would look at front drive shaft bearing, or u joint. maybe broken pin or worn coupler at the rear. if it does not go away with the clutch in, its drive line sumthin

then started doing this? Bad U joint or out of balance pressure plate gives a hell of a viabration. My example I chucked up a 8BA flywheel between ball bearing centers, its balance was off just a few minor grams Put the pressure plate on and the balance sunk like a rock. So its the old weld washers on the new pressure plate. out of the box way off balance. just saying |

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
A -36 would have a tube driveshaft and no middle support bearing so my bet would be U-joint or torque tube bearing as first suspect.
A real worn pinion bearing would make a noise even when load taken off by depressing the clutch. If the splines are real worn on the drive shaft that would be my next suspect on the list. |

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
Sounds like a dry u joint. Mix up a slurry of grease and gearoil that you can pump from your grease gun, it worked for me. Had the same issue as you discribed. I give mine a good shot at the start of each season and no more vibration in the last 25000 mi.

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
Does the 35 Ford have a torque tube center bearing that could be worn out?

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
the vibration started Friday after driving about 30 miles. mostly thru steering wheel but some vibration in the dash area. no center bearing, with car in gear on jacks, makes no vibration, only during acceleration when driving, gear oil fresh and full, will check with magnet for metal in lube oil, no vibration in top load shifter handle, ran car in garage with wheels spinning bearing area not hot--will drive it Monday on the road to test theory, but first I will lube the universal with my combination. will test out and let you helpful people know.

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
Check the steering linkage. There might be too much play. I had what appears to be the same problem. Sometimes at a certain speed, the car would wobble. I had to stop the car to "Reset" normal driving. I had a loose ball joint on inspection. made the correction, all is well.

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
i would go for another 25mi. drive, and crawl under and feel all the bearings. front drive shaft, pinion, sides of the bells, and hubs. bad bearings make heat. if you find nothing unusually warm, i suspect something worn or loose in the drive shaft. keep us informed, good luck

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
37don-you won the prize!! pumped in tube of the mixture of goop and ran it, within ten feet you could tell the difference--ran car over 60 mph with no vibration. drove about 30 miles, no heat in bearings, did cross rotate the tires for laughs. came back to the garage and pumped in about 2/3 of a tube more and will drive it again tomorrow. Thanks "barners" you saved me, I hope from pulling the rear out for now. will watch for the vibration return.

Re: bad vibration on 36 sedan
Glad you found the problem. Just give it a few pumps of goop now and then and all will be fine.
