Rebuilt means different things to different people.
Some thinks its a set of rings, a valve job and a coat of green paint.
I'd be real leery of this one.
On the other hand, if it was in real good shape to begin with, maybe it would be OK....

Whom ever or who ever is interested in one of the "A" motors. Should ask around in the area to see if the guy has a reputation. Contact a local "A"
club or anybody else into old cars. And see what shakes out. You never know till ya' ask....

Run away. I do not think you are going to find a good rebuilt engine for that price. Over the years working on cars I have seen to many so called rebut engines that were junk. Model A engines is not that easy to get right. It is not easy like a Ford or Chev V8.

When I was a kid I got stung on a "rebuilt" model A engine. It was painted nice. I took it home and took off the pan, and with the front main bearing removed, I could lift the crankshaft a quarter inch. After that, no documentation, no sale.

It's no wonder that people are reluctant to post once in a while. You guys are ripping him a new one when you have absolutely no idea what this person has for documentation. If I lived in the area and was in the market for an engine I would at least have a look and see what he has for documentation. Geeeez. My two cents worth. Don/WI

I don't think anyone is ripping him, I think they just want him to be careful if he decides to buy one.

I don't know about the re-builder, but I have known the contact for many years. He is honest and is a friend. I am talking to him about a trade for a Model T engine now.

My $5 engine runs nice after a valve job, balance and a B cam. Ran ok before the work. It was a 1956 Sears rebuild that was used on a home made garden tractor until the early 80's. Than sat inside a friends storage until 2011. When I pulled the pan and it had very little sludge in it. Sounds good on the stand. Should run good enough until I can afford to rebuild the original engine for the delivery the way I want it. Rod

If you can rebuild the A engine for $1275. you are better than I. Rebuild means bringing the engine back to like new. That means boring cylinders, babbitting the bearings, grinding the crank, replacing the camshaft, new valves, lifters, both cam gears, balancing. Plus what ever else is wrong. Like valve seats, crack in block or head, cleaning water jacket. Plus labor. Maybe it was refreshed, like new rings and adjust the bearings.

I'm not saying the engine is no good. I'm saying I do not think it is rebuilt.

Is it just possible that the rebuilt engine were part of a deal where the seller bought a bunch of stuff?? Does the original ad state anywhere that the seller rebuilt them???

Hey guys, I have to tell you that I am with Don/WI here. While it is OK to be a little skeptical and a lot cautious, nobody has any idea of what the actual condition of these engines are. The seller says he has them on engine stands, and that they are running. Well, with a running engine, if you have any experience at all, you can tell one heck of a lot by listening to it, racing the idle for a bit, and watching the exhaust pipe...
Since there is no "legal" definition of what a rebuilt Model A engine actually is, it is quite possible that these engines have had a top job and a bearing clearance adjustment. That could be done for the price asked here.
I am not familiar with the seller in this case, but he lives about 2 miles from me. If I were in the market, I would certainly venture up the hill to see what he has. Gad! And I thought I was a grumpy old man...!
